I like 'em, and I run one. But only as an auxilliary. Tried to use just electric and car overheated (big block, though) ended up using a belt driven w/shroud and electric on front of radiator as a pusher.

If you do not currently have cooling problems, go for it. Plus, it really cleans up the front of the motor. Make sure you run it on a relay. they draw alot. Summit and jegs have relay kits and also thermostatic switch kits to turn it on and off at different temps.

just food for thought. If you look under the hoods of pretty much any manufacturers V8 trucks, they have mechanical fans. Some with hd cooling will add an electric, but still maintain mechanical. Also make sure your electrical system is up to snuff, like I said, these draw a lot.

basically the only reason i want to dump belt driven fan is on 2 separate dyno tests,it showed 12-17hp increase at rear wheels.
my cooling system works excellent right now.i just wants the almost free ponies...

what type of belt driven fan. fixed, or clutch. the clutch works well and draws very little hp. Plus, easy to install, simply put clutch where fixed fan spacer is. Mp has kits, real easy

try bobmazzoliniracing.com, they sell a short clutch, although @$80 bucks. I ended up going to a fixed fan, and have a short clutch. for $25, it's yours if you want it. If you are interested, I can measure it for you to see if it will fit

Default A hot one...

I have a very hot running 318 that has 12.5:1 compression that will run about 190-205 in the heat even if had a windmill to attach to it. This is a hot running motor - I have tried a 160 thermo, a 180, washers, and finally have found the best being a 195. It gets to 195, and seldom goes much higher. With the 160, it would heat up and never cool off, since it always above the 160. A wise man (Christopher BTW - where has he been?)once told me that built motors will run at whatever temp the combo wants to be at, and it is best to match the thermo to how hot IT wants to run, not what YOU want it to run at.

I use a standard Auto Zone electric fan to cool my combo that works fine for normal street driving. It gets about 5 degrees hotter that the thermo if I get on it and mess around, but for the most part is a very streetable combo. I can make short trips without any fan at all, without even hitting the thermo.

I 100% agree that your electrical needs to be up to snuff though -I can't tell you how many times I was late for eliminations cause I was charging my battery since I left my fan on. I also FREQUENTLY forgot to turn off my Alternator switch, though...

Go for it!! You can always put the old stuff back on... or go with a Mopar Performance Viscous Fan package (clutch type).

Also, how about an ALT switch too? I heard that it draws up to 10 HP to spin a charging alternator versus a non charging alternator? I be interested to see the rear wheel results from that one...

Yeah, alot of those electric fans that are advertized are only rated usable for engines with like 250-300 hp at most, you think thats just a very conservative estimate from the manufacturers? Or do you think they really cant handle lets say a mildly hopped up small block?

If you plan to run a thermostat, hayden has a model that screws into a 5/8" (I think) npt socket. I mounted my in my intake manifold where the water comes out of the head. Most of the thermostats I found were a push it through your radiator core type. I didn't want to risk hurting my radiator, and I think this is a better place to measure.

Default get one

I use an electric fan on all my cars low + high performance cars I have no use for mechanical fans anymore.I use the hurricane fan from vintage air but thats just preference. as long as you go with the highest cfm rating that will fit your car.

Haven't put this new combo together... What do you think - I'm torn...

SB Stroker - 545HP

It's going in a PU - with a new HD 3 core (huge) rad.. Using the 8 blade MP mechanical pump with cavatation plate.

Was hoping to eliminate mechanical fans... (want to run March pullie set up).

I was going to fashion a shoud out of polished aluminum and run one in the shroud as a puller and run one offset on the front as a pusher through the tranny colloer as well???

What do you think? Should I scrap the electric puller and use the viscous combo instead?

Thoughts?

I'm not overly worried about this engine heating up as my other stoker like to run cool, but this one is very radical and 1/2 the block is filled with moroso block filler as reinforment... (250 shot of the bottle as well).
