I heard that before a certain year seatbelts are not required. And i am wondering what year that was because i have a 67 chrysler that didnt come with seatbelts and i plan to install some when i redo the interior but in the mean time if i want to go for a cruise do i have to have them? Thanks, oh and this is in california

In Cali, if the car didnt come with it, it isnt required. I got a ticket once for no seat belts as a passenger, went to court, told the judge what year car it was (64 VW) and that seatbelts were optional in it and he waive the ticket. Go cruise that beast!!!!!!!!!!!

My '64 Valiant didn't have them and the operator manual says they were optional.
I know 1968 was the year for some type of belt law, but I don't recall what it was. Both of my '68 Fury III's had shoulder belts and I think they were standard. |

i had a73 duster that had from what i was told was optional shoulder belts (you had to hook them seperate from the lap belt) and was told by a cop that i didn't have to wear that part unless i wanted to, but i had to wear the lap part cause it was standard.

seat belts
well here in the show me state, if you don't piss off a cop, most only stop you in your old car to check it out. if you are driving like an idiot they will write you for what you are doing. and never say a cop is stupid, just go with what he tells you, it will cost you less in the long run...

A convertible with no seat belts, make sure not to roll over in that car!! Here in Washington, the law says that every car manufactured after Jan. 1 1968 must have rear seat belts and every car manufactured after Jan. 1 1965 must have front seat belts. My '69 RR doesn't have rear seat belts, but I've never had any trouble with the cops... after all, for a 30 year old vehicle what difference does 1 year make? And most cops don't study that area of the law because how many times are you going to pull over a classic? Also when I got the RR all it had up front were lap belts; after I'd owned it for about 5 years I realized that the 2 holes in the headliner were meant for the shoulder belts to bolt into. One of the previous owners must have taken them out, a choice I agree with because they ruin the look of the hardtop when all the windows are cranked down. They're easy enough to take out since they aren't integrated with the lap belts. Same for my '71 Ambassador, I never wear the shoulder belts and have never had trouble with the cops even though I've been pulled over lots of times (never for bad driving though). Also the shoulder belts on it are missing a little washer that makes them fit tight on the lap belts, so the shoulder belts just fall off anyway.

I think it would be next to impossible to roll this beast, she is a 67 newport convertible. She rides so low due to the sagging springs that it would take a rollercoster loop to get her upside down.
But thanks for all the info and advice. |

in NY State cars newer than 1964 are required for front seat passengers to use seast belts and rear seat belts for passengers younger than 16 years old.

If the car did not come with seatbelts, they can't make you put them in. It's a Grandfather clause.

Superman:
No special tools are needed. American cars from about 1962 have the reinforced weld nuts in the floor. You should be able to push sometheng sharp through the carpet and find them. Dennis Jokela |

Seat Belt Laws
I guess most states are pretty close on their laws. Tennessee is that all cars 67 and newer must have seat belts and used. Trucks and Vans 71 and newer.
I personally like seat belts. I learned years ago, when you drive like I do, you need something to hold a body in the seat! |

Um why the hell wouldn't you wear seat belts, and shoulders, if you got em???
Let me tell you a quick story...I just finished fitting a world famous neurosurgeon with special glasses(I don't need to get technical here, just think of the thickest you've ever seen, and multiply by 3) because he fell off a bicycle while riding without a helmet. He's now confined to a wheelchair, all for not using safety equipment, What irony..how many people h's treated for his same problem. Our old high performance cars can do things we'd never expect, and we should all at least take advantage of whatever protection we can. Real racers, BtW, never balk at wearing safety stuff, and if you're showing the car, not driving it, this is the wrong forum to complain about "originality". |

Anyway, the Feds mandated seatbelts in all passenger cars starting with model year 1968, and in all pickup trucks starting in model year 1972. Most states recognize these years as mandatory in their seatbelt laws, but as some others have stated here, there are exceptions to that. |

That sounds typical for a big company. Phelps Dodge is famous for that down here. The miners get close to retiring and guess what? Adios!

Seat belt law in New York states that any car manufactured in 1965 or older does not require a lap or shoulder belt. Also any vehicle with a gross weight over 18,000lbs, special purpose vehicles (const equipt etc) emergency vehicles (ambulances fire trucks) postal vehicles, cars used for newspaper delivery (but only while delivering papers,) and last but not least police cars. Children under a certain weight (don't remember the weight) and or age must be secured by an approved child seat fastened by a seat restraining device.
Florida law is almost identical. |
