Default setting up an 8.25 rearend

I have an 8.25 rear end that I am setting up with a 3.90 and an auburn suregrip unit. I'm having trouble clearancing the pinion. It is scary close to the auburn unit when setting it up.
How do I go about clearancing this. Should I grind some more out of the housing? How close should the larger unit be to the pinion gear?
I'm trying the car on the ground tommorow, and this is proving to be troublesome. Anyone have any history doing this?

Thanks, Peter
