Hemivaliant,
Maybe you could answer a question for me? I have a 73 Duster with front drums. I have a set of I believe to be 73 Duster Disc brake spindles. Do I need to change the upper control arms, or the lowers for that matter? Sorry I can't help you. SJS440 |

SJS440, You will need to change the upper control arms and(I belive) the lower ball joints to use the disc brake spindles. The upper control arm part #'s are 3402702 3402703.

upper control arm with disc brakes is p/n 3402 702 for rt. side
upper control arm with disc brakes is p/n 3402 703 for lt. side upper control arms for drum brakes are different than disc brake ones drum brake cars take 3722 460 and 3722461 lower control arms are the same for disc or drum brake cars p/n 2948 572 and 2948573 I have seen some '73 - '76 lower control arm without the sway bar mounting tabs on them though but don't see a separate listing for these in the parts manuals The parts manual lists the same lower ball joint for drum or disc brake cars. Moparscott,
Thanks for the info. I have a '72 parts manual that was no help. Glad to see someone out there has a newer parts manual. HV |

I know we have talked about this a bunch and not to beat a dead horse. I took the spindles and drums of the car today and set the disc spindles up in with the original lower (off the disc car) and the orginal upper (off the drum car). Everything appears to fit, except the spindle appears to be alittle shorter. Do the disc upper control arms drop down more to make up for the shorter spindle? If not what is the difference?
Just checked at the auto parts store and the replacement upper balljoint is the same part number for disc and drum. Not to say they could be wrong, but could someone please let me know what difference is between the two? Thanks for your help. OK guys I just finished the disc brake swap on my 73 Duster. I used spindles off a 73, and changed nothing else. As I stated earlier I checked and the ball joint part numbers are the same so I decided to bolt everything together. Full suspension travel and wheel turns lock to lock. The only thing I have not done is install the calipers, as soon as I pick them and install them I will post that. Everybody and there brother told me you have to change the upper control arms, but no would tell me the reason. It seems on 72 and older you do have to change the uppers, but you get lucky on the 73-76. If anyone knows why you have to change them please post it.
Thanks SJS440 |

The reason you have to change the upper control arms is because of the use of smaller ball joints on the earlier cars. The 73-76 upper ball joints are physically larger, in the mounting boss & the stud, than the earlier 67-72 A-frames.
Make sense? DB ------------------ You're only young once, but you can be immature forever! |
