Default Re:oil pressure question

To 72 Challenger and to 1972 Roadrunner, Thanks for your info on the oil pressure question I had. I was a little worried there for a bit. This was my first backyard overhaul since I was a kid and did a 216 chevy six cyl. This 318 turned out so well that I was a bit concerned with the oil pressure, so thanks again. Now that I'm here, will you please recommend a good brand and weight of oil I should use after the break in of the engine? Again, thanks.

Roland

use 20-50 for summer and 10-40 for winter. What ever flavor you choose.

no prob, glad to help a fellow MoPaR friend

i agree with dirty dan, but i wouldn't use penzoil...its got some kind of detergent that crystalizes it when it gets really hot...my dad never uses the stuff after he rebuilt a chevy motor that was run with it. the oil crispied up and cloged the oil return holes in the heads (under the rockerarms) and filled the valve covers, starving the motor for oil, locking it up.

i am using valvoline racing 50...it is strait 50 weight. dirty dan is right, use 20W-50 in the summer, and 10W-40 in the winter, only because the 20W-50 gets VERY thick in the winter, and makes startup a little hard on the starter. this is what i have experienced...

have fun, good luck!

I've used Castrol GTX 20W-50 for more years than I remember. I know the 50 weight is a little thick for making max power or getting the best mileage, but on the other hand I'm usually driving high mileage motors with a little more wear than most. My '88 Die-Nasty daily driver has over 200,000 miles and the pressure's just too low with anything thinner. As for the Challenger, I guess I'm just too old a dog to try new tricks. If you really want to see some contoversy about which oil to use, search for the thread I posted called "Synthetic oil BAD!!" for some different viewpoints.

As for using thinner oil in the winter, I don't. 20W is just fine for any temperature above freezing. Not sure about your San Antonio winters, but I'm not even sure what winter means. Just the days get a little shorter, I guess! If it gets down into the 50's during the day, man, THAT'S COLD!! BRRRR!!! But I've heard some other guys have to even deal with something called "snow", not sure what that is either!

Castrol GTX. 10-30 on brake in's. The thinner oil gets going to where it needs to be quicker. 10-40 otherwise. 20-50 when it's going to see some ruff times. Heavy driving, racing, as well as long trips with extended driving.

Hmmmmm. I'm not sure if your lucky or unfortunate. You miss so much in ski, sled, snowball fights and, the bad side, rust, salt and banging other cars around.
