Locks the transmission between forward/referse (hince the name trans brake). It lets you rev the engine against the the resistance of the torque converter, then launch with the flip of a switch. Here is an example:

hot rod magazine had a good article on trans brakes a few months back. They installed one on a duster.. I remember them saying something about not using one unless you have an abundance of traction to begin with.

so can you use a trans brake with stock converter
and have the best of both worlds in a street car?
drive around normal and than if you want to launch
a say 3500 rpm you can or does it not work that way?

Doesn't work that way. You'll only load up to the maximum stall of the converter.

The transbrake doesn't effect the stall speed of the converter.
If you mash the brake pedal and stall against the converter, the entire drivetrain is preloaded all the way to the brake drums. When you release the brake there is smooth application of power.
With the transbrake, everything behind the trans is relaxed. The transbrake locks up the trans so when the converter is stalled and the transbrake is released, the drivetrain is shocked much like dumping the clutch on a standard shift car.
Shocking the drivetrain works well on some cars, not so well on others. There are lots of variables.

it is my understanding that you also need to have a torque converter that is made to work work a trans brake sepcifically, too. The again, that was my GM dorky brother speaking, too....

BTW - Cool in car shot. I'm guessing by the scoop that it was a late 80's Mustang, and that ran low 11's by counting 'em off.

'79 Mustang Pace Car replica. 10.39 on a 347 small block. No Nitrous, blower, nothing! I'm still pissed about how fast he has that car running!

If you put a trans brake behind a 700 HP 440 slip in a set of 4.56's and mount up a set of 14X31 slicks with a 4 link it will easily remove any loose dental work ....that's why atoetly talks with a lisp....LOL

I drove it once and it kinda felt like having your a$$ shot out of a cannon.

I'll warn you up front...you need lots of tork to make them work otherwise when you pull the trigger the motor will just bog.
