Question help identify my transmission please...

Hello,

I asked this question as part of a different thread about a week ago and got no answer. So I thought I would post it under its own heading and see if that helps.

I have a 727 in my Coronet that I don't know what it came out of. Can someone tell me how to find out what year the transmission is?

I want to possibly install a shift kit and need to know what year it is.

As a follow up to this what brand of shift kit is the best to go with?
I need it to retain the automatic feature incase my wife was to drive it. I want it to shift harder (of course) and hopefully shift at a higher rpm. Right now it shifts nice and firm, but with light throttle application it shifts out at 15 mph and 25-30 mph.
The down shifting seems kind of strange. It downshifts into 2nd at about 5-10 mph and won't go into first until stopped. I'm used to manual transmissions and this automatic is all new to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mopar_Maniac

The vin is stamped on the pan rail on the pass side. Might be able to gather something from that.

The transmission part number is stamped in the drivers side pan rail, right above the pan gasket, it will begin with PK. Post the number here and someone can ID it.
The TransGo TF-2 is a great kit.
Your upshift speeds sound about right. It's not uncommon for the car to have to come to a complete stop before the trans will downshift to 1st.

I finally got my car up on a hoist and checked for stamping numbers.

On the right (pass.) side I couldn't find any numbers at all. They might be there, but the header tubes run along the side of the tranny so I can't see that area.

On the left (drivers) side I saw some numbers stamped in around the center area of the case. The numbers were 058578 or 058558. I couldn't tell for sure.

I called the guy I bought it from and he said that he thought it was from a 1977 or 1978. He said it came from a HD van with a 400 V8. It does have the truck type deep pan with a factory drain plug mounted in the front.

Any idea's?

Thanks,

If you take it apart, it might have the 4 gear planetarys. Which is good for torque handling capabilities.
