I CAN GET A COMPLETE CAR FOR FREE FROM A FRIEND OF MY DAD'S IT IS ON A FARM UNDER A TREE AND I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD HELP E FIGURE OUT THE SIZE OF THE HEMI IN IT!
IT IS A FOUR DOOR DODGE ROYAL IM NOT SURE THE YEAR BUT SEEMS TO BE AROUND 50 TO 55 IN THAT AREA. I CAN LOOK AT IT WHEN I GO TO VISIT MY DAD THIS WINTER AND PULL THE ENGINE IF YOU THINK IT IS WORTH IT. IT HAS BEEN SITTING A LONG TIME AND A VALVE COVER IS PULLED OFF BUT STILL THERE. IS IT WORTH MY TIME TO MESS WITH?
THANKS FOR THE HELP!

Bcuda, pull some numbers off the heads and post em!!!
I got a small list of them. If its a 55 it might be a 331 or 345. there are also some good web pages that are easy to find that have pretty complete info!!

First Dodge V-8 was 1953. All 53-55 Dodge V-8's are hemis; 53-54's are 241 cubic inches, 55's are 270 cubic inches.

In 56-57, only D-500's were hemis--315 cubes in 56 and 325 cubes in 57. Non D-500's were poly-headed versions of the same motor, in either 270, 315 or 325 cubes; these can be converted to hemis by bolting on Dodge hemi heads.

Chrysler hemis came in 331, 354 and 392 inch versions, depending on year, while DeSotos came in 276, 291, 330, 341 and 345 inch versions, depending on year and model.

Virtually nothing interchanges between the Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge hemis, as each was based on its own block with different bore spacing. Just to complicate things further, some of the later versions of each make had taller decks and other changes which complicates interchanges even within the various years of each make.

When you're asking if it is worth fooling with I assume you mean the motor and not the whole car. My view is that an early Dodge hemi would make a great nostalgia motor for an early mopar or a light weight street rod of some kind, but it has too few cubes for any other purpose. Also, performance parts (and parts in general) are much harder to find for the early Dodge hemis than for the Chrysler hemis. Bottom ends on the Dodge motors were none too strong either, as main and rod bearing sizes were on the small side.

hemi-1, Will the heads between the 241,270,325 hemis interchange? I am looking at changing over from a 325 poly and have access to a set of 270 heads. Thanks,

Rob

I haven't tried this myself, but, according to the info I have, unlike the Chrysler hemi heads, early and late Dodge hemi heads are the same width and will interchange so long as you use an intake that is the same year as the block. The 325 poly is a tall block, so a 270 intake will not work (be too narrow, like putting a 383 intake on a 440), but a 315-325 will. The 270 heads have 1.75 intakes and 1.41 exhaust. 315-325 heads have larger 1.87 intakes and 1.53 exhaust. Again, according to the info I have, the larger valves can be installed into the early heads. Whether even larger valves can be used I don't know.

Obviously, the 270 pushrods won't work on the tall block either. There are a couple of early hemi parts sources that advertise in the Mopar mags and in Hemmings you might want to contact for additional details, but the heads should fit.

1954 was the first year for the Dodge Royal and was only offered with the 241 hemi. 1955 the royal V8's was only offered in a 270 polysphere or 270 hemi. 1956 it was offered with 270 polysphere, 315 polysphere, and 315 hemi. 1957's V8's were the 325, and the 325 hemi. 1958 no hemi's were offered but the V8's were the 325, 350, and 361. 1959 no hemi's were offered, but the V8's were the 326, 361, and the first year for the 383. Hope this can help you some.
