Default 727/A518 tranny pans....

was just reading the new mopar mag, its at work forgot wich one, and they had an article about upgrades for 727's. the way I read it they said that you could substitute a A518 pan for the thin stock one, its even deeper than the mopar deep pan and has a dimple for the magnet to get the metal shavings. Did I read this right??? If so, does the A518 pan have a drain plug like the mopar deep pan or is it a mess to change fluid like the original?? Is the fluid capacity different enough to warrant the trouble of changing pans?? Any body know the cost difference from the mopar deep pan and the A518 pan???? thanks........

I don't think any of the stock pans have a drain plug. It is easy to put a B+m type plug in but not easy to keep it from dripping. I will just buy the cast aluminum pans with the drain plugs.
The pans are deeper because the valvebody has more layers -needed to operate the extra features. So the 727 pan will not fit the 518. Just thought I'd add that for those who lower their vehicles.
The pans will use from 2 to 6 extra quarts depending which one you get.
My diesel/618 trans needs 11 quarts after draining all night.

One thing in that article that I thought was cool is that MP has the new style steel core rubber pan gaskets.I bought an engine gasket set from a local Chrysler dealer that had a set of valve cover gaskets with the steel core and I love them.I've had the valve covers off and back on probably fifty times and the gaskets look brand new still.I am putting a new motor together right now and put a pan gasket from SCE on and if it works as well as the valve cover gaskets it might just be worth my while to do the pan swap in the MA article and use the steel core gasket!

The extra fluid capacity will keep it cooler. There should be no problem with the stok pan at all. But the extra fluid is a plus.
I dont know if the 518 pan has a drain plug. The performance pan does. I do like hat.

I have a stock 518 pan. It is almost 3x as deep as the 727 pan and has a drain plug. It is steel and I will sell it for $50 plus shipping.

Default Good gaskets are available

Just got a trans pan gasket for my Dakota (46RH). Didn't ask specifically for it because I didn't know it was available, but it is rubber w/metal. Much better gasket than the cork ones I used to get from Ma.

fox - so your saying that the A518 pan will NOT fit the 727 tranny????? or is that just a worry if you lower the car....... maybe I should just take some reading lessons about the article.... I looked at the pans in different catalogs and they don't look like the same pattern for the bolt holes.....

I know the gasket is the same on my 618 and so is the filter so the pan should fit I think, but I'm almost certain because it will bolt up.

73challenger - are you talking modern style steel core valve cover gaskets for a small or big block???

If so, particularly big block, then I am drooling just thinking about it where did you get them and do you have the part numbers!!!

Default A518 vs. MP A727 Pans

THe first time I changed the fluid in my A518, I was going to put on the MP A727 deep pan since it had the drain plug. The A518 pan was about 1/4" deeper than even the deep MP pan. The MP pan wouldn't even bolt up. They might be a cheap trick for an A727. You would still need to extend the filter though.

Yea, I have known Cal for like 15 years. We give him all our business...

I'll have to ask him about the gaskets. I am really interested to see if they have them for big blocks!

727, a518, 46rh, 46re, 47rh, 47re= all the same pan configuration. I've been using them for years. Mopar Performance also has a filter extension kit for the 727 to use a deep pan. I have also seen some people selling a machined aluminum block that serves as in extension too.
