Default Anyone run in SCCA?

I want to get into it but dont see much old iron in em. Thinking of solo II (I think) Just wondering what tires and wheels to use. Not much for anything in 15's. Also trying to figure out the suspension set up. Looking for mainly roadracing and hopefully to run in "onelap of america"

I'm a drag racer who recently became addicted to Solo II. I race here in Tucson. Since my Cuda is disassembled, I race my Dakota R/T which is a blast. You're right that there isn't much in the way of old cars at the track (mostly ricers). Here in Tucson there is a 68 Camaro, a Cobra, plus there was a beautiful 66 Shelby Mustang (far from stock) that ran one month. But that's about it, besides little "kit" type race cars.

Since you are in Chandler check out the Phoenix region SCCA website at:

http://www.azsolo2.com/

Their website doesn't appear to be working this minute... Anyway, during the summer months they run at night at Firebird. The next Phoenix event is August 10th. I haven't been to one of the Phoenix events but I heard it's pretty cool to race at night. In Tucson it's free to watch an event, so go check out the Phoenix one.

Most of the racers use Kuhmo Ecsta V700 tires, but you are right the tire choices in 15" is for import cars. You might need to look in to 16 or 17" rims.

My best friend is building his 68 Firebird for autox'ing (he currently races his Pontiac GTP) and I can't wait to get my Cuda out there to race.

Later,

I don't regularly do SCCA solo II, but I have ran it a few times for fun when they have an open invitation day for non-SCCA members. For starters, you should contact the SCCA for more information because some changes can (or will) move you into different classes of competition.

My car runs stiffer torsen bars, stiffer rear springs, sway bars front and rear, polygraphite bushings, and gas shocks.
Tires and rim sizes are very important in this type of racing, but I'm not sure how it affects the classes.
My car has cheap 15x7" rims and 255x60x15" BFG Street radials.
I bought these for daily driving and they are really too small and too hard a tire compound for SCCA solo II (in my #4,150 Charger.)
I would use at least a 16" or 17" rim as wide as will fit, and some sticky performance tires (not drag tires, the sidewalls are too soft.) Good brakes will also help.

Thanks guys. I will deffinately have to check out the Firebird races. Dak-Cuda, are you going to try to make this one? I gues first thing more or less is to weigh the car and see what the distribution is. Probably not very good. I want to take the Bondurant class but the wallet says no for now. We had a ACR Neon but never got into it. It was always this or that, even bought a 500 car for the Grassroots 2001 Challenge, and again money got tight before so I could even dump any more monewy into it Hopefully this time I might be able to get the wife and I out there. Looknig at tires it is seeming like 17's becuase of the width I need. About a 8-9 inch wheel out back and maybe a 7-8 inch up front.

No I probably won't make the Phoenix event. I ran the autocross here in Tucson today. It was a tight course this month with like 5 180 degree turns. It's tough for the long wheelbase club cab :-)

Check out the SCCA rulebook if you want to try and build your car for a certain class and try to be ultra competitive (i.e. some classes only allow DOT tires or stock size tires, etc.). Otherwise build it the way you want it and have fun with it. Cars are meant to drive hard and enjoy. Like my truck... it only has 18800 miles on it, but 101 quarter mile dragstrips passes and 18 autocross runs now!! :-)

You would know of a wheel that would be strong enough for the old iron in a 17? It seems the 17's have the best selection in competion tires. Since the engnie is far from stock That alone will probably disqual me from some classes already.
