flex plate to torque converter gap
I just hook up the motor to the trans and noticed that the gap between the torque converter and flex plate is around a 1/4 inch. Is this too much ? The motor is a 440 and the trans is a 727. It has been a long time since I have built a mopar and my memory has faded. Thanks for any help, Ron

Any gap between the flexplate and converter is not good.
Before installing the flexplate to converter bolts, it's not uncommon to have some gap because the paint on the converter snout might be a little thick and preventing the snout from seating in the crank register. Once one or two bolts are installed the converter should pull up with little effort. If the converter pulled up hard and, after the bolts are installed, there's still a gap or the flexplate isn't seating square on the drive lugs, the converter snout isn't properly seated in the crank. If the snout isn't properly seated, the converter will be too far back and will most likely destroy the pump in short order. |

gap
I have had such a gap as to where I had to pull the convertor up to the bolts so they coud reach.
And never had any pump problems. But John is right about freedom of movement. |

converter gap
1/4" gap is no problem. Any tighter than that and you could have interfereance problems.

Thanks for the replys. I did have to pull the converter up closer to get the bolts started but it bolted up with no problems. The motor and trans are in the car now. My next problem is the trans crossmember has to be modified to fit the later year 727. The car body is a 65 Belvedere. Here is a picture o the motor in the car.

There's no need to modify the crossmember when installing a later 727 in the '62-'65 B body, Schummacher makes a polyurethane conversion mount.

Very nice looking mopar ,,,, it looks like it's already full from eating all the ferds en chev'z . and it aint moving yet!!!! dont ya just Love da Mopars... oh is the gap where the bolts go though flex into the converter?, after they are tightened down cause if so , if im thinking right , that would leave it loose and it would have play from the flex plate to the converter, wont bind cause that whats the flex plate is for,,, every one i have dealt with was tight against each other, the only time it was not, was when it came loose screwed up converter and the bushing and seal it sucked, with play it will have a (ping bell) sound cause the converter will do like a plate spun on a table. im no expert but i learned the hard way, stuff aint cheap no more, converters 400 to 1000.00 dollars or more. take no chances ....... once again Very nice looking mopar there me bud
