Currently I am using non-detergent oil in my 35 Plymouth original Flathead six. Is it ok to change over to the detergent type, lets say, 10 w 30? The old timer does not have many miles but has a tendency to smoke some.

I HAVE NO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE,BUT EVERY THING IVE HEARD YOU SHOULD NOT USE A MULTI GRADE DETERGENT IN A CAR AS OLD AS YOURS,A STRAIGHT GRADE WOULD TEND TO BE THCKER.I REALIZE THIS AN OLDER POST,SO MAYBE YOU HAVE
BEEN ADVISED. |

In my 48 Power Wagon I switched to detergent oil and before long I had oil leaks everywhere, I went back to non-detergent and the leaks gummed back up. I eventually rebuilt the engine and now use 20-50 Kendall detergent.
