Question 1963 dart engines

most of us know chrysler made 2 popular slant sixes, the lagendary 225 and the 170. The question is which one do I have? I am not sure the car has its original engine so what numbers on the engine can help me figure out what engine I have?

If it's possible that you have the original engine, check for the VIN on a machined pad on the oil pan rail. Compare that to the VIN tag on the door jamb. If they are the same, you can Galen Govier decode it for you.

There is likely to be someone on this forum that knows a better way, but this is the best I can do.

Chris, the VIN and the data plate will show a digit code that can be translated into the engine the car came with. As stated earlier, you would have to verify that the original engine is in the car. GT's had the 225 standard, optional in the rest. You may also look at block itself at the engine serial number. On slant sixes, this is on the passenger side below the head. The serial number will start with a letter, then 225, 198, or 170, followed by an eight digit engine serial no.

Chris....below the head mating surface, passenger side usually right above the coil....flat machined surface,on the block usually covered with oil and grease about 2 inches long.
