Laugh Waking up my 318

Ok, here is my next project, I want the 318 in my Satellite to run a little stronger b/c I reviewed my situation and a bigger engine won't happen for a while. The engine is out of a 78 leanburn diplomat. running around 8.5 to 8.75 to one I am guessing. I've got a Comp 260 grind cam in it, Holley 650, a Edelbrock performer and a 727 with a B and M shift kit, I'm going to a higher stall comverter, 1900-2100 soon and was wondering about heads to search for in the bone yards. I'd like to boost comp. up to maybe 9.25, what do you guys think and how should I go about that. Thanks for all your help, I'm an FNG here.

I would go with a set of 360 heads, any model will perform better! A set of smog heads and a good valve job! Make sure you have a correct 360 intake also. The 318's have very small ports. Also deck the heads as much as possiable. And use the old steal shim head gaskets for extra Compression. Make sure you have the intake plan to match. With a performer RPM intake, these parts could be good for 50 horses! With a free flowing exhaust!

Just some thoughts!

Good thoughts there 6 packin. I would make 1 change though. Instead of 360 heads, stay with the 318 heads and a performer. Not the RPM. The Performer has 318 sized ports.
Reason being is the 318 can use the small ports to it's advantage. The smaller ports will keep velocity up and mixture well atomized. The larger ports on the 360 head will make less power due to the small engine size pulling/drawing the fuel from a large area.
The cam is a small unit and will work with the heads and intake well.
Look for the newest 318 heads you can find. Mill the head down to achieve the comp. you want. From what I have been reading here, others with 318's of simalar years find the comp. lower than what was advertised.
A 3 angle valve job with 1.88/1.60 valves is all you'll need.

Late 318 heads, about 86 on up, are the swirlport design and are probably the best flowing small block head that is readily available, casting number ends in 302.

I am with Bill on this. Don't do the 360 head unless you are looking for huge rpm on top. The port are way big for a normal 318 build. A well ported 318 head will do about 330hp at 5-6K rpm, and still have very good low and midrange. The 360 heads will absolutely kill the bottom and midrange.

I would look for 302 heads off a late model 318,and run a good header/dual pipe exaust...

Heres a site that shows you what a little work can do for you. I like this site. The person who did this sometimes comes here.
http://www.geocities.com/alwest_83/index.html
Scroll down to the 318 title. Read till the end. He has a compare between the heads.
Thanks to Bill55AZ for coming up with the swirl port head years. I couldn't remember and forgot about the west page for a bit.

Default headers

thanks alot for all of your input. I has anyone had any good luck or bad luck with different headers? I was looking at some flowtechs, a little pricey, but I work at an auto parts store. has anyone seen the block hugger headers? Heddman offers a set for 318's. I was looking at them for a little bit b/c I have a one peice exhaust from the manifolds to the glass packs and was trying to do as little of exhaust work as possible. thanks again, you guys are great.

Default Hey Rumblefish

Rumblefish,
I am building just about the same engine combo you have. This is my first engine build. Could we exchange some ideas? mopartom251@cs.com
Thanks,
Tom
