Default Single field to dual field

I know, I shudda paid attention the last time this came up but, bear with me. Subject is a 69 Roadrunner big block with a single field alternator. I understand it isn't that hard to convert to dual field, so if someone would be so kind as to give me the step by step I would appreciate it....

You can install a dual feild alternator using the stock 1969 Regulator by just grounding one feild terminal and connecting the other one as before.

If you want to convert the regulator also, to the newer electronic type then you have to do some re-wiring because the electronic regulator controls the return or ground side of the feild and the other side gets +12 volts from the key on ignition power (which also has to go to one of the regulator terminals.

As 451 mopar pointed out, the easy way is to gound the second terminal.

The rest of your system will operate just as it did before, and you will see the benifits of the newer, higher output alternators. I've found that the old style regulators are just as reliable as the newer ones, so I usually don't bother to change up to the new regulator when I do it.

You can use an electronic regulator without rewiring(if rewiring isn't your thing).

If you want to use an electronic regulator , electronic regulators that look like your old point's style one(and go in the same spot in the harness), are available.

Quick and easy.

Wiring it to the 70 and up style works too, but that's more work.
