Default Sort of a Bizzarre combo

My first car was a 87 new yorker that was 12 yrs old when i bought it, soldiered on for 5 yrs only needing a 15 dollar fuel pump for repairs. I sold it running perfectly and bought a crappy 12yr old 4 banger ford just so my gas mileage wouldn't take so much out of my pocket (3/4 hr commute to school and work). The manual is fun enough and the girls think the horseys are pretty but it's ball-less.

I have always liked mopar squad cars since watching the blues brothers as a kid and thought if I could pick one up cheap I might do a 360 M body quasi-squad car, and yesterday an old man was selling a mint diplomat for 500 dollars. 500 CDN for a running car is a heck of a deal, another guy is selling a 440 with 727 trans for 800 CDN. so for 1300 CDN (700 USD) I could potentially have the pursuit squad car Chrysler should have made in the 80s. digging up a big enough rear end should be easy so for a pretty small investment you could have a 5L eater hell maybe a corvette tamer.

Has anyone done anything like this?, my service manual says that 383 was an option on a early model year and externally thats fairly close right? Does this sound possible?

As for gas mileage, screw it, I'll park the dip in a friends field when I'm not using it. and the money I save with the 4 banger manual should cover the roasted tires.

There are guy's on this page that have built big block m bodies.

I understand that it isn't too bad of a swap, because the sideways torsionbars, leave a lot of room for the exhaust.

I think schumaker makes mounts for the swap also.

As for the 383 option, it must be a misprint. 383' were fased out in the early 70's for the 400. Then the 400 went bye bye, around 78. Never came in a diplomat, although it would have been a nice ride.

Hey Dave571
What is the deal with the schumaker mounts ?
All I ever used was the factory mounts.
in such aplications as this 78 diplamat that I put a 440 in. Please enlighten me as to why would anyone use them.
I have also done many e and b body swaps the same way.
with the factory mounts.
Unless the car was a 6cyl why buy mounts?http://<a href="http://" target="_bl.../78%20diplamat

I've never done the swap. I just assumed that the change from small block to bigblock would necessatate a mount change.

It did in my van, and as far as I'm aware it does in things like a bodies also(mount or crossmember).

I have done big block from c into e without a mount change, and into b as well.

If there's a factory mount that will do it than have at 'er.

Default swaps

I once put a 440 in a 72 or 73 duster.
Same deal factory mounts.
Nothing special about the mounts ,nothing special ordered.
Just fresh out of the bone yard.
I always use the same cross member that came with the car.
As for trans mounts I used the same type they came with.
That is why Iam as to why people buy these mounts.
I think I will start a new thread on this and so where it goes.
What do you think?

I seen a guy to it to his Marada (SP) and he had a small clearance problem with the vaccum brake booster. No big deal.

If you bought the car in 99 ( 12 years old ) and it soldiered on for five years then you sold it in 2004 ??? neat trick.

No 383 Diplomats either. But it sounds like you got a real sleeper lined up. The Diplomat with a big block would make a good car. Maybe not the best handling car, but still a good setup. Best of luck!

Quick Claims Adjuster!!!
