What are you planning to do with the car? How much power are you lookin to add? Somthin like a 100 HP! Sounds good right? With a 383 it can be had! They can wind tight and make good power! So you need a set of well preped heads! Maybe Indy or Edelbrock RPM's. Or ported out stockers with 2.14 and 1.81 valves! Also a good single plan intale like a Dominator (good luck)
I would suggest a solid cam maybe like above .550 lift and above 230 deg dur @ .050. Make sure you have a good bottom end though like arp bolts and maybe Mildon main studs and widage trays. Also you will need adjustable valve train for this. Look at Crane for this (roller rockers) 1.6 Ratio Your stock crank are good peices. Or you could grind a 440 crank down and add sume major cubes to it. If ya want to keep the 383 block. With these suggetion I would add atleast a 3.91 gear and above, with a 2500-3000 stahl. This will smoke about any chebby or crustang out there! |

Yep - all that.
How are you going to use the car? How many miles a year are you going to drive on the street? |

A.) Gears: 3.91 or 4.10 (4.56 with taller tires).
B.) Electronic ignition upgrade. C.) Headers. D.) Aluminum intake (open plenum if bigger cam is put in with 4.10 gears, dual plane if a close-to-stock cam will be used and/or stock gears). E.) Hydraulic cam upgrade (.480-.500 lift, 220 duration, something like that). Much more lift and major changes to the valve train are required (springs, adjustable rockers, etc). The above mods are bolt-ins/ons and will work with the block and heads you have now. A 383 likes RPM so gears will make the most difference and I would do them first. If you put in a hotter cam first (because it raises the power band and can make the low-end soggy) the stock gears will hold it back plus it will be hard on the clutch. A 383 4speed with a .509/292 cam, headers, 4.10 gears, Torker style intake with performance carb and good electronic ignition system can ball-park in between 12.50 and 13.00 in a full-weight B-body if the engine is in decent shape. Good tuning and driving can get the ET's even lower with these same components. |
