Default Headers/A-Body

Now that some of you folks have helped me select a Cam for my 273 Dart, now it is time for your experiences (good/bad) to suggest headers 1 5/8 of course. The last headers I installed was on a 1971 Camero (y'all know what they are don't you) and don't hold it against me. My son was only 16 and did not know his mind. I have heard a lot of stories about how tough it is to install headers on A-Bodies without lifting the engine, removing the starter, front suspension disconnect etc. These stories come from some of the guys in the mopar club that I attend occasionally. I hate to admit it but most of these guys are full of B. and do things off the cuff, little concern for doing things the best way. So, Who makes the best performance headers that will fit my Dart without having to modify or move things around.

The second part of the question is; what type of exhaust tipes did Chrysler have in 1967. My best recollection is turn-downs. I know that Dough Wilson remembers with all his grandkids, but he is probably not as old as I am. I have a daughter a son and three grands, 2 boys 1 gal. She is 3 1/2 and has already helped me work on the Dart. Carter has helped me turn some bolts, sand and paint. She looked like a little old mec. Anyway, thanks!

1971 Camero (y'all know what they are don't you), Sure, it's that thing I gave a pasteing to the otherday.

Header not to use would be a Black Jack. Had to cut the flange and dent it in 2 places to make it fit.
Almost every instuction sheet I have seen includes tilting the engine.

This answer is a guess. Straight tips w/slight oval.

Lucky man having a Jr. pit crew with ya.

Thanks rumblefish for the good advice. Doug sorry for misspelling your first name. My wife pointed this out and told me to watch what my fingers are doing, except in certain instances.

Dave....I forgot what year the Dart is. Did you ever get ahold of Jim Dowell at Racer Brown?

The 65-66 273 (235 hp) used the single exhaust with rectangular chrome (then black) resonator tip. Neat system.

The B-bodies from the same period used the dual exhaust with two turndowns just about even or slightly inside the rear bumper, about 36-40 inches apart.

The 67 RT and 67 GTX, Dart GT and Barracuda started the chrome oval/rect. type tips.

The 68-69-70 Muscle cars continued the slash rectangel or oval tips. The 383-4 in the standard cars still had the turndown duals. Always had that sleeper look.

gotcha, I have a 1967 Dart. I called Jim Dowell, he recommended a Mechanical Cam (that is what my 273 has), 226/450/108. He said that it would be a good street cam and also would be fun at the strip and of course good torque, low , mid and high. When I am ready he will grind it for me and supply all the components. He's a great fellow to talk with. I appreciate the info on the tips. I know which tip you are talking about, I looked them up in the year one book. I probably won't buy them from year one cause they a too expensive. You want to hear a funny story gotcha. 2 year ago I was at the Turkey Rod Run (big show) at Daytona Beach Florida, as I was walking by one of the venders, who was selling mostly Che_ _ parts, I noticed a pair of exhaust tip hangers intermingled with all that Chev stuff and they looked a lot like the one that I had, sure enough they were. I got them for $2.00. Been great talking to ya again. Take care!
Dave

Thanks rumblefish! Nice to hear from you. Ya, our granddaughter is really great fun. Carter (granddaughter) has been to the drags and loves it. She really cheers the cars on a is always saying go faster. I use to have a Dakota 5 speed, she loved riding in it and was always saying go faster papa (papa is easier to say than grandpa). I am priming her for racing when she is 16. She will be the best darn mec around. I think your guess was correct, gotcha said the same thing about the tips. Nice chat'n. Take care!
