Lightbulb 8 3/4 rear-end problems

Ok, MOPAR guru's. I have an 8 3/4 rear end with a 742 case that recently sustained a pretty severe impact on the passenger side. Since then, it has had a pretty bad wobble on that side. We assumed bent rim, and replaced it. Then bent axle, and replaced that also. But I still have the wobble on that side tire. What else could have happened to it?

well, theres a couple of things. the 8 3/4 had end play adjustment. if its too far out, it may cause the wobble you describe. check a service manual for specks.
also, did you replace the tire too? you coulda broke a belt.
last thing: check the suspensin for broken springs, shackles, etc.
thats about the best i can do.

If the tire and axle didn't help, well sorry to say, but I would say that you might have to replace the pumpkin, maybe even the whole rear.

Dusterbd - we had to replace the tire and rim both on that side. The axle that we replaced had the solid the retaining collar, not the adjustable. But what you're saying is that if there is enough free play in that collar, it might cause the wobble we are talking about? When we put the car up on a hoist and run the wheels in the air, you can watch the brake drum and wheel wobble about an inch in reference to the backing plate. Is that what the problem may be? Also guys, you mentioned that the pumpkin might hve damaged. What might have happened to that? Thanks guys.

Default bent axel

A bent axle is what you started with.
And a bent axle is what you have now.
IF you pull the it back out and take it to the machine shop.
They can put it in a lath and tell you in 10 minnets or less
If Iam right or not at a cost of $5 or $10.
I have never seen or heard of hog head damage that would
cause so much woble as you described.
Also even if the end play adjustment were out as far as possable.
It wouldn`t produce the woble you spoke of.
Have you ever met a man called Murphy?
I think you have just been introduced.
Hope it helps
Dan

If it wobbles like that maybe the drum was tightened down at an angle and thats why the drum moves like that too, just a thought.

Blaine96.....the wobble you described has got to be outboard of the center section (pumpkin).

Bent axle
Bent axle flange
Bent housing tube.

One of these is about the only things that can cause runout as severe as you described.

Dirty Dan is correct about chucking up the axle and checking. If the axle is straight....the housing tube or flange is bent.

Having a bent housing is what I was afraid of. I may just replace the whole rear end and start from scratch. Dirty Dan- I hate to agree with ya, but it seems like this one may have gone the way of the warrior. Thanks for your help and advice, guys.
P.S. Ditchpickle-I have derbied, and several friends in the area that still do.

It's unlikely that a bent housing would cause a wobble. Think about it, no matter how much the housing may be bent, the axle flange is still straight. A bent housing may cause excessive toe in or toe out of the tire but not a wobble.
What is the axle end play? Have you even checked it?
