upgrading my 318
2 years ago I put a '77 318 in a '52 fargo, fixed the rust and banged out the dings. I customized a flatdeck for the bed, and got it painted canary yellow. I am now ready for the engine. My 318 runs quite nice, and is pretty stock with some exceptions (dual exhaust, air cleaner). My current idea is a 600 cfm Holley carb, Edelbrock intake maifold, B&M shift kit and Dynomax or Hedman headers. I figure this pakage will gain me 50 hp and 60ftlbs give or take (correct me if I'm wrong). I've heard that a new cam is a great idea for a 318, but I would like to stay off that route if possible. I would appreciate all options and suggestions on options for performance upgrades.

A cam change isn't needed to increase HP. But, it would be good. Even if it's a small cam. I really don't see a 50 hp gain from what you posted without a cam change. None the less.....
Use the 4bbl. Edelbrock. That's a good intake for the 318. As far as a carb is concerned, use the Holley. There a little finicky. But fine. 600 cfm is all you need. Headers are a great upgrade in performance and mileage. Go with a 2 1/4 exhaust size pipe with an "H" connector if you can. I like Hooker aero chambers myself. The open element air cleaner is very good to have. Ignition was never mentioned, but it should be a good reliable unit. Muliti sparks are best for power & mileage.
