Post Big block Mirada??

ok, I'm not sure but is an 81 dodge mirada classified as a J-body? anyways, i was looking at a dodge mirada for sale here and had a quick look at it, it has a fresh paint job and looks pretty decent and has a lot of potential i think, the only prob is, it's got the 'ol slant six in it that, while bullet proof doesn't have enough guts for me, and i'm wondering how hard would it be to put a 383 and 727 that i can get cheap in there? has anyone else done swap in a J body or similar car like a diplomat or something? I didn't check the rear-end in it but with a 6 cylinder i'm assuming it's the 7 1/4 grenade or something similar, but is it possible it has something beefy enough for a 383? what rear-ends did they come with? what else would need to be changed? I'm thinking all i need to do is yank the 6 and trans, get the big block motor mounts stuff in the 383 and 727, change the torsion bars, get the correct length driveshaft if needed and do something about that damn rear end....i don't think i'll be able to find a b-body 8 3/4 cheap enough, would a dakota rear be about the right width maybe?

It is a J body, and with a 6 you will need to buy motor mount adapters, and the rear is probably a 7.25, but the car also came with 8.25. There are 2 big block J bodies here in Arizona that I am aware of. I think the existing front torsion bars are adequate.
They are probably the same for all engines, but don't know that for sure.
The dakota rear is about 3" wider at the backing plates, but you can just use rear wheels with more backspace to compensate there.
I have 2 J bodies and will soon put a cop car (88 diplomat) rear end, 8.25, 2.9 ratio suregrip, under one of them. The 8.25 is good for all but serious racing.

Dude if it is a 7.25 it won't hold up to a mildly built slant 6 I am almost positive the 383 will shred it in minutes. As for the engine swap I have seen a 383 in a diplomat but don't remember what it took to get it in there I would ask him but he died of lukemia a year and a half ago

Ok it seems that every 10 post i make one has to be about this, I tried to sit back and let somebody else throw out this answer, but ...At www.engine-swaps.com they have the mounts and info to throw a big block in a j body. If it's like the a body swap you'll also get a booklet with tips and tricks to help out in other aspects of the swap.

Okay, I'm pretty good at this......
Check out my 440 J body at http://crazymoparguy.homestead.com/thedoobler.html

The engine will go in with late model spool type mounts. The stock oil pan will fit. The big block 727 trans, when used with an 8 3/4 rear will use the REAR SECTION of a two piece clubcab longbox Dodge pickup driveshaft- 1972 to 1992. The rear end is a mid 60's B body 8 3/4" with the spring perch locating holes opened up. The power brake booster is a small Kcar unit, bolts right in.
I did it myself, it worked, and it worked REALLY well.
I also used Hedman hedders for a Bbody, but I had to modify the rearmost driver's side tube. There is now a header made for that application, I believe.
I ran a Moroso deep pan with no problems, as well as a Hemi pan, which was a TIGHT fit.
Email me if you have any questions, or anything seems strange.
