Thats an interesting question.
But you didn`t mention wich engine you wanted to know
about.
Remember the more detailed the question ,the more detailed
the answer.

Of course is better running on a Magnum Heads!

The stock head have a little conducts compared with the magnum head, also the compresion ratio is increased, it means, more air-fuel mixture is flowing to the combustion chamber wich is flaten so the mixture is compresed more than the stock head, and the exaust is bigger and smother so the engine can breath easyer with more horses.

Cool

Go to the Ram Truck forum and do a search on the subject. It's been discussed many times over there.

General question, general answer.

The Magnum head flows better at lowwer lifts than the earlier heads. The rocker ratio is also 1.6 as compared to the 1.5 of the older head.
This means that a .500 lift in the old head is now a .533.
Remember new springs with the swap!
As said, smaller head chambers. More comp. Be careful of valve to head and piston to head clearance.

The trade off of running a Manum head is expense. Everything from the heads and its gear to the intake are going to be changed. This is not for everybody. You have to want to do it. Larry Shepard/MoPar performance has writin a few things about this swap. Look into the engines book and other pubs for more info if you can.
Go here to see some more info on these heads from Hughes engines.

The later LA heads, 302 casting for the 318, 308? for the 360, are very good and compare favorably with the Magnum heads. Hardly worth the effort and expense to go with Magnum heads on the pre-Magnum engine. 88 to 91 318, or 89 to 92 360 small blocks are the best years for the LA. If you really want Magnum heads, why not get the entire Magnum engine? Just put a carburetor on it if it is for an older car.
BTW, the Magnum exhaust manifolds flow better than any other stock exhaust for LA and are the only part that bolts right up without some engine modification. You will need different pipes, tho.

I dont think the drivers side magnum exhaust manifolds fits any older mopar due to steering column interference.

Isnt the new magnum head a type of swirl port ? This is a more complete combustion fast burn chamber. The heads incorpate adjustable valve train. There is some disadvantages though like the small choice in intakes and speical lenghth pushrods and AMC Lifters. I still think the swap would be worth it too!

Shouldn't the stud mounted rockers allow you to rev higher/quicker than factory shaft mounted rockers?

No. That is a spring related issue I believe.

Doug, keep in mind that the hot setup for the brand Xers is to pay big $ to switch to shaft-mount rockers. Score another point for Mopar!

i love my magnum heads i spent 5 1/2 months working on them over the winter and will be going on a 408 LA 360 theyflow way better then my 302's and my brothers 308.s i ported polished gasket matching open bowls ,chambers deshroud ed blended anything that can be done i did it to all three sets of heads and the magnums walked all over the 308's and the 302's especially on the exhaust side .i would rather have the R/T heads than the edlebrock aluminum heads you can run 10 1/2 to one no problem on pump gas i bought a bare set for 100 bucks brand new stainless valves 1,6 rockers you can get 1,7 for nearlly the same price .i don't now why anyone would rather have 302's or 8's lifters 2.50 each pushrods around 40 to 60 bucks a set threw mopar '
.
