Something is in the driveshaft!
I pulled the driveshaft out of my '79 Aspen R/T 360-4 # match car today for a transmission swap. While putting the drive shaft into the trunk, I noticed that something was rolling around inside of it! I tilted it back and forth a few times. It definitely sounds like something metal, and weighs at least a few ounces. The driveshaft has the factory welds on it. Chrysler extra care in engineering MY ASS!

Gee, 23 years old and your just noticing something rolling around in the driveshaft!! You have nothing to complain about!!
You're taking the numbers matching trans out and replacing it!! Shame shame!! Can't rebuild the old one?? Why are you crying??? I had a 78 Aspen R/T 360 and loved it!! You want to sell yours? Let me know!! |

Maybe it's rust. I think one of mine makes a bit of a noise too.

Some shafts had a damping material in them that would keep the shaft from ringing like a bell under some conditions. It may have broke loose.

sixpackcuda - Yes, I'm pulling the # matching 727 out, but I'm keeping it, because it's the # match unit. It is a lockup 727.
I found a nice heavy duty NON-lockup 360 truck 727 in a 1976 1 ton van, and cleaned it up and went though it and put in new bands and clutches and so forth. I bought a used factory 340 converter which should give me about a 2500 stall, compared to the 2000 stall of the lockup converter. This (# match) 360 is moderately built with 7.7 compression, big cam (Comp Xtreme Energy 274), and headers and TQ on an LD-340, and currently runs 14.6@94 with 3.90 Sure Grip gears in the 8-1/4". The calculators at prestage.com say 240 RWHP. You can feel that the 2000 stall really hurts the car off the line. Once the 360 winds up a bit, it goes great. But my 60 foots are around 2.2 right now. I've never had the dirveshaft out in the 4+ years I've had this car, except for dropping the rear end of it to put in the 3.90's. It's not for sale right now (but if someone had $10K...). You can see pictures of it at my website - www.angelfire.com/pa5/timk225 |

I was never aware that they put the 727 in the F bodies from the factory
I had a 77 volare-360 4bbl with the 904 "Available transmissions included the A230 3 speed (Slant Six only), the A833 4 speed overdrive (Slant Six and 318-2 only), and the A904 and A998/999 Torqueflite 3 speed automatics." |
