This is a subject we hit on a lot here. 318's are strong, inexpensive motors that a lot of people have for daily driving. 600 cfm is perfect for a 318, make sure you get dual exhaust to help it breathe (min 2 1/4" max 2 1/2")and look around boneyards for a set of 302 1985 318 casting heads to help. A cheap ($30) PAW double roller timing chain, mild (260) cam, and Edelbrock dual plane intake, and a slightly higher stall convertor from Mancini Racing(.com) should make a quick but durable daily driver for most applications. What kind of car/truck is this going in, and what do you want to do with it??? Other tricks can be applied, but I'll let some of the other guys chime in to give you those....

it's in a '52 fargo. obviously im not trying to reach insane hp with a 318, but I would love to beat my buddies 4.6l s-10. im just looking for some options where i could get some good torque and hp gains for about $1200-$1500.

Try using the "search" button at the top to locate some of the other threads about 318's. You should come up with a lot of tips and tricks to help you along. Good Luck!!

thanks, thats helpful. yeah it's a truck, probably same weight as most of the trucks in '52. it came with no serial, no vin #'s. everything was stripped and dented, we got her shinning like new though

I got inspired by the site mentioned above, and my 318 is in a truck too ('77 W200). Currently i'm doubting whether or not i should advance the 0914 Hughes came some 4 degrees, from inlet closing at 36 ABDC to 32 ABDC. In the mud, in lo-gear, the truck is absolutely a blast to drive, but with 36ยจ tires and 4.10 gears a traffic light sprint starts alittle embarassing (until 2 - 2.5 krpm, then it's fine
