Default TorqueFlite 727 into a 70 RR

What's intailed in installing a Torqueflite 727 trans into a 70 Roadrunner?
Its an original 440 4-speed car, and I want to talk my friend into putting a Torqueflite into it, since we'll be bracket racing the car.
I dont think we will reach our goals (High 10's) with a 4 speed.

We'll be using an ATI Treemaster Converter, Local Built trans (the guy is good he's built tranny's for quite a few local racers).

Thanks!

I'll buy your 4-speed parts when you're done with the swap!

Later,

Greg

We need some info on doing the swap before he can sell anything though, lol.
(going to have to include that its a friends car in my sig, but i like researching this type of stuff).

Thumbs up

Well I had a 73 Challenger and the switch was easy. The trans crossmember should be the same, just change the mount. My driveshaft even worked. If your racing it then just get an aftermarket shifter.

Thanks,
Will the flexplate and converter bolt up to the crank thats in the car now?
Good stuff thats for the info!
If he goes for the swap a Cheetah shifter will go in there, nothing else.

If you got the tranny, converter and flex plate off of a 440 then you shouldn't have a prob...I imagine the crank should have the same bolt pattern.

RamSS,
I appreciate the help, but i think you misunderstood my last post.
I've been reading about the crank being drilled for flywheel, and it got me wondering if there are particular "manual" or "auto" cranks. If the flexplate and converter will bolt right up then thats the info i needed
We'll be using an ATI flexplate and ATI 8" Treemaster converter when it comes to that. ATI makes "tight" converters that flash high. (Flashing a converter is basically stomping on it from near idle). I dont care what the stall speed is, just the Flash RPM and if its tight enough to be streetable for a good 5000 miles a year.
John (the owner) is looking at keeping the 4 speed, but our plans are to bracket race so i'm doing my research and trying to convince him to skip the clutch and put in an auto.
The only thing with clutches is its "manly" to row gears, and it makes for good bragging rights, but being whooped by cars with less power and breaking more things are the downfall.
Thats why i'm looking at the auto as the correct choice.

Thumbs up fit

Yes the flex plate will bolt up .
the engine is a steel crank motor .
these cranks were factory drilled to make room for the pilot shaft and bushing for the manual trans. The later modle cast cranks were not.
The steel crank engines were internaly balanced.
Your tourqe convertor will go right in no sweat just like it comes from the company, You may want to use the after market flex plate as they are stronger.
And will allready be drilled for larger tourqe convertor bolts.
Use a cheta full manual valve body and hemi clutches.
Ask your trans man about bolt in sprags.
They are a good thing to have but not an absolute requirement.
You will have to use an after market cooler as the manule trans didn`t require one.
The bigger the better.
High stalls means high heat.
Heat is the biggest killer of transmitions.
Good luckand hope it helps

IF your running 10's you will need a SFI flexplate anyhow, along with a trans sheild and/or blanket, crank dampner and other related saftey equipment.
I think the lower trans crossmember may be different, but automatic trans crossmembers are pretty easy to find. I also am not sure about the driveshaft length?
I guess you plan to use a cable shifter like a B&M, so linkage is not a problem?
I don't know what valve body you have, but if it is not a manual valbe body you will need to make linkage for the throttle pressure/kickdown lever.

Thanks, i forgot about the trans sheild.
All the ATI stuff is SFI approved.

Is the crossmember different or the same?
