Dist,timing,vac adv????

This ones esp for you cuda...since you brought it up...
Among the many things the PO did to my Demon (that needs fixing) is the distributor. The vacuum advance is disconected- "Mopars always run better that way" was the proffered explanation...
This motor seems to have alot more potential...my next step will be a good timing light w/ advance..but I need to know more about curving the distributor...i'd like to go with a new one ie the msd billet dist, but am looking for suggestions in that dept too...can I curve the dist myself? I saw something about a distributor dyno in one of Cuda's posts.....more explanation please!

You can do it yourself. I don't. I have a guy that puts a custom curve in, based on your requirements, for $40 + parts.

If I were you, I'd buy a new distributor, send it to him or somebody like him, and be done with it.

Thats to easy to do your self! The guy who told you to plug the vacum advance up without inspecting your distributor is not to smart! Mopar has alot of mechanical advance built in! You need to find out what advance plat you have first it should be # from 9-17! The higher the number the more mechanical advance you have! Depending on what cam you have lets say you have a cam with around 225-230 dur@ .050 lift and maybe .450-.490 lift! These cams like about 15-17 deg initial advance! A new timing light with the advance knob works great. Also you want from 34-36 deg total! With a 11-15 advance cam you wont need vacum advance. Just set intial timing and leter fly! Make sure you dont have to much total though no more than 36 deg! For a stock 340 cam just run 12-14 deg intial with about 34 deg total that means about 20 deg mechanical advance cam which will be about # 11 or so! A # 17 advance cam has 30 mechanical advance alone! Which means that you cant run much initial timing which idle suffers poorly! You can also shorten the slots on the advance cam buy shortening them .050 length (the same on both sides!

the vacuum advance is really only there to help keep the plugs clean and improve gas mileage during cruising. it should have no effect on tuning or performance when disconnected.

the easiest way to see whats going on is with a dial back timing light. use it to set y6our total advance at 2500 rpm, and then check waht you have at idle. the difference is the mechanical advance.
