carter AFB compatibility
I have a chance to purchase an used 625 cfm carter afb in good condition at a decent price. It came off a chevy, and is part number 9637 which is EGR ford. Are there any large differences between this carb and a 9636- chrysler model, or is it just the linkage adapter?
Thanks... Al |

All of the 9000 series Carters were basically the same, except for the throttle liknkage. The Ford one which you have has the extra kickdown linkage on the side. If you have a 4 speed or maual valve body and no cruise control, the linkage cobbling is minimal. If you have a torquflite or cruise, big headaches hooking that up. The edelbrocks use an adaptor for to hook up the kickdown and throttle from the basic chevy style linkage, but the 9000's use application specific linkage. Confused yet?

Also on the ford carb, I forgot to mention, the PCV hose nipple on the front is like a 1/2", way bigger than the typical 3/8" unit. Easy enough to adapt I guess.

The right adapter costs $10 new, which is cheap enough. Is this just a matter of replacing one for the other, or is it more involved?

The linkage for the ford is actually peened onto the end of the throttle shaft. I think you could cut the ford stuff off of the main linkage and make the adaptor work, but I would do a lot of measuring first, or you may wind up with a carb that doesn't fit anything.
