I'm building 400 with 440 crank and need to know how to identify when the block
was made ? I wan't pre-76 block. where is those ID numbers located in block ? My friend have 1 block which has casting numbers like 400HP and 280176. I think it's made early'76 and is HighPerformance, but is that block 76-78 casting ,or is it pre-76 better casting ? Or am i totally wrong ? Thanks, Kimmo Hedman http://www.prostreet.net Finland [This message has been edited by Kimmo (edited March 09, 1999).] [This message has been edited by Kimmo (edited March 09, 1999).] |

There should be a casting date on the side of the block. I'm pretty sure all B engines have them on the passenger side. Here are casting numbers for 400 engines according to Year One:
71-72 3614230 73-78 3698630 76-78 4006530-400-12 Not sure why there's an overlap in years. Hope this helps. |

Easy way to ID a big block is to look at the ID pad near the distributor. Letter or numbe before the displacement is the model year of the car which the block went into. A is 1965, B is 1966, etc. In 1974 they changed over to numbers rather than letters. So a 1974 400 would read: 4T400. 5T400 is a 1975 engine.
BTW - no reason not to use a block cast after 1976. Cylinder wall thickness didn't change contary to what MP says. (All of us Mopar fans wonder why MP is run by idiots. We wonder and wonder but nobody ever tells us. Biggest mystery in the business) The quality control was poorer so the casting thickness tends to be inconsistent. But I've seen blocks cast in 1978 that are much thicker than ones cast in the late 60's or early 70's. |

Hey Kimmo how are things in Finland?Hows the Mopar scene?Got any unusual mopars we here in the states haven't seen?My brother has been to France,He brought home two export 71 Hemicudas, and to Sweden,He brought home a 67 Hemi satellite.Well your 400 is the least Identifiable BB I think Chrysler made.I have two in my garage,a steel crank 72 hp and a 74 400-2bbl,Niether have a letter or # preceding the displacement on the dist ID pad!!A 72 is the only year to get your shorts in a knot over as it was still a high nickel/tin content block(5-7%)after that it dropped to who really knows what % but all are acceptable blocks. A good rule of thumb is to bore the least amount required and not exceed .030 unless you sonic test it for adequate cylinder wall thickness. What kind of car are you going to put it in?If we can help you with parts that are hard to find over there then e-mail me.Hope this helps....PRO...
