Cry Leaking 727

My newly rebuilt 727 is leaking from the dipstick tube. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this problem and if I should have used some kind of gasket sealer on the O- ring ?

Very common problem, but I've always replaced the o-ring. If the edge of the transmission hole has a sharp edge, it will easily cut the ring. I suppose RTV might work, but it makes a mess where non is needed.

Yep...mine leaked badly too. New O-ring (even though the tranny was just rebuilt) ended up solving the issue.

Coating the o-ring with petroleum jelly before installation usually helps to get a better seal. If the o-ring is new, could be that the o-ring hole is not in good shape (out of round, nicked, previously machined). If the o-ring is new, and a coating of petroleum jelly does not help, I would just get an o-ring that is one size larger. You can get one in the plumbing section at any OSH for like a quarter, and it's the same thing you get in these rebuild kits.

I've tried gasket sealer, and the results weren't very good.

I had one that leaked too, even with a good "O" ring. I think the indent in the tube may have had a crack in it?

Anyhow, some of the killer Mopar Automatic transmission RTV (black stuff, forgot the part #) works great for sealing transmissions and is what the factory uses on the new cars tranny pans (no gasket needed.)

I just used the clear Permatex RTV. It fixed mine right up, without having to pull the dipstick tube.
