Do a leak down test and see where your at.

Are you sure it's not just a rich carb condition causing black goop to puke out the pipes?

Have someone stand behind you when you rocket launch that thing and see if it's black or blue smoke coming out of it.

My guess...excessively rich carb.

Let us know.

I would hope that it is just an over rich condition causing alot of carbon build up.

I know that my '69 has a carb that needs to be rebuilt (OK, replaced by a Speed Demon). She spews out black crap, when you start the engine (I've got two nasty marks at the entance to my garage, from this). She also is running so rich that she'll make your eyes water, if you stand near the rear too long. At times, I can also smell the exhaust, during in town driving. When I get her out on the highway and open her up, I can see the black (never any blue) cloud behind me (only lasts for about 5 - 10 seconds), as it blows all of the crap out of the exhaust. It also leaves crap on the bumper, the panel behind the bumper, and the back of the deck lid.
