comp cams extreme energy or nostalgia plus series?
I've heard a lot of raving about the compcams extreme energy series for small block street applications. When I recently spoke to one of the part suppliers I use he told me great things about the nostalgia plus series. It is a new series based on the purple shafts, but using current ramp/lobe technology. For example the MP484 is called the 284PP484 and is 284/291 (239/246 @0.050"). We all knew the exhaust could have used the longer duration. Lift is still .484". Those specs are very similar to the extreme energy cca-220-225-4 which is 240/246 @0.050 lift .507"/.510". Anybody use the purple plus cams? Cost of both of these is within $5.

I wouldn't use either one of them. I've been reading a lot about the Comp Cams lately too - but consider how much advertising they do in the mags that are writing the articles. Give them a few cams for free and ask them to evaluate them, and if they're better than the crappy Chevy-style lobes that they used to grind, of course the author will say how much better they've gotten.
But compare these cams to those of real, experienced Mopar cam grinders. For example, Hughes engines has two that are similar to the duration in question. The HE3038 is a 276/286 (230/237 @ .050) and it has lift of .515/.535! This is a shorter duration than either of the Comps, but with more lift. An even closer match in duration is the HE3844 at 237/243 @ .050, this one's got lift of .535/.540. Compare the Comp "Mopar" grinds to their Chevy grinds and you'll see they still aren't really taking advantage of the larger lifter size that Mopars are blessed with. Go with a real Mopar cam grind. |

The best MOPAR cam is a Racer Brown cam. He has many flavors available or will custom grind a cam for your application. Second choice would be a hughes cam.
A good MOPAR grind will take advantage of the large lifter diameter that the MOPAR engine has. This large diameter means a faster ramp that you can't get with a GM grind. |

Ehostler, does Racer Brown have any hi-lift hydraulic .904 lifter grinds, comparable to Hughes and Engle or close, in the 230-240 degree at .050" lift area? I do know their cams have run good in Mopars through the years. Thanks

comp cams now does .904 lifter cams. just add HL (high lift) to the end of the xtream energy cams part number. they are also grinding tight lash solid lifter cams called the MM series.

Just spent an hour on the phone with Jim at Racer Brown...the man is amazing, his knowledge overwhelms me...his logic makes more cents than a 55 gallon drum of pennies......
I would recommend anyone about to make a cam purchase take a few minutes, spend a couple of bucks on the call and spend some time with Jim....you'll be amazed at how much he can teach you in just few short minutes. After 2PM EST, they make cams in the morning and answer the phone in the afternoon. Be sure and tell him your from the Moparchat.com board. |

Want high lift for the duration? Ultradyne has their "Extreme" .904" lifter solid grinds. More lift than any other cam I've seen.

I would still use the race proven experience of Racer Brown. Jim isn't just some monkey that works at a cam maker. He's been designing and making cams for a very long time.

I'm totally committed (and should be) to Hughes cams. I refuse to go with Comp, or Crane, or Isky and on................. simply because they've been flogging they're chivy designs and trying to pass them off on us. Only since a smaller, and more current designer (Hughes-Ultradyne) stepped forward and showed what things could and should be like, did these other manufacturers suddenly do a complete about face. And I still don't trust them.
I'll stick with the little guy thank you. |

Comp cam
I`m using a comp cam in my 383...Grind # XE274H-10 and it works pretty good....488/.491 lift, 276/284 dir. It has a nice loppy idle with good bottom and mid range torque....
Huges I will never buy...I tried to buy one and the man on the phone wanted to know my cranking pressure...How can anyone know the cranking pressure on a new motor with out a cam in it? He just couldn`t get that through his head.... Mopar cams was all I use the buy but I won`t unless I can get one a a good price...Had 2 of there cams go bad within the 1st few days..Lobes were eaten off and yes, they were broken in right... Nostalgia plus series I know nothing about so I can`t comment on them. My $.02 Joe |

Hughes normally only wants to know static compression, as cranking pressure is different from cam to cam. There may have been some mis-communication.
A comp-cam is fine, however for the same money a Racer Brown or Hughes cam is superior. |

Mopar cams...not even a slight chance would you find an engine that I build with one in it...ain't ever going to happen....I've seen the computer profile graph on a Mopar Pourple shift cam...you can't even imagine how far out it was compared to the Comp that was eventually installed in the motor...not mine I just saw the graph and couldn't believe it.
I'll be profiling a Racer Brown this winter and let you all know how the graph looks. |
