Default Aaaaarrrrggghhhhh..... I Hate Pinging!!!!!

My truck is driving me crazy!! I put the old 318 back in my truck, all stock. 12 degrees initial advance, 34 degrees full. Stepped down from Autolite 65's to 63's, fattened up the Carter 625 up a lot. It still pings!?!?!?!? Whats wrong with this stupid thing ? When I get on it (above 1/3 throttle) it clatters like crazy. The egr works, it's got 89 octane in it. It pull 18 psi of vaccume at idle, so I don't think there is a leak. I don't get it?? Someone help please before I set this thing on fire!!!

Sounds like you need better fuel (91 or 93, instead of the cheap 89). Your timing could also be coming in too fast. Try to adjust the vacuum advance unit.

What do the plugs look like?

Are you sure you don't have a bad throttle shaft giving you an vacuum leak at the mid throttle position?

What RPM does the distributor pull the timing in?

Not knowing what year it is I'd have to question the initial timing at 12, wern't some of these motors spec'd at around 8* initial?

Back the timing up until it stops pinging, it it stops running before you achieve that, then you've got other problems.

I might even pull the vac advance off it and plug it then try it again and see if that helps.

Test and Tune......

Well, the vaccum advance isn't even hooked up, I had it hooked up and that made it even worse. I shouldn't have to run 93, it's an old 84 318, stock compression. The carb only has about 45K miles on it, so I hope it's not worn out. When I pulled the 65's out to change them they were a slight tan color, not black, and not white. I'm gonna back off on the initial timing, then bring down the vac advance on it.

Default I guess its fixed...

Well I think I got it. I followed the old factory sticker on the inner fender. I set the base timing to 12 degrees, then by 2500 rpm the mechanical weights have it to 25 degrees. I hooked up the vaccum advance, and that brings in another 25 degrees (!?!). It only pings for about 100 rpm going up a steep grade, after it upshifts, with 87 octane, in 95 degree Texas heat. Thanks for the help guys

If all else fails read the instructions
Are you sure the EGR is working properly? The EGR ports in the heads have a bad habbit of clogging up and then you can start having problems on stock type engines.

I checked the function of the egr before I put it on, and I checked the ports on the heads when I put the Edelbrock intake on. They were all good. I just had it timed too hot I guess, I'm gonna play with it some more later, but for now it runs good (enough).
