Default speedometer gears

anyone know where i can find the gear for a speedometer since i have a different gear ratio in the rear and a totally different rear..i pulled the rear from a junkyard for $90. its an 8 1/4 suregrip with 2.94's i believe, the tag on the rear said 2.9 and it was a cop car so thats what i was figuring, but the gear for the speedo was gone. abyone know wehre i can get one since i checked all the junkyards. i dont think i can just leave the one in now because i had a 7 1/4 rear w/ the 2.26s(thank god they are gone)..i appreciate any help..also, i havent put the new rear in, what size u bolts should be used?

Use the same sized U bolts as what's in there now. I usually get one off intact so I can bring something in to size them by and then cut the rest off to save time.

Get the speedo gear from the dealer. Look at the housing in your tranny for the current one and make sure that it'll have the right range for the gear you need, you might need to order that too.

The 8 1/4 is bigger then the 7 1/4 so you'll also need to have your driveshaft shortened if you didn't get the proper one with it.

I do beleve the u bolts for the 7 1\4 are to small, you will need the brackets for the 8" one along with the u bolts.

As Diego said, the 7¼ used smaller U-Bolts. You will need the correct U-bolts AND shock plates. The U-bolts and shock plates can be had from any 8¼, 8¾, 9¼, or 9¾ (Dana 60), as they are all the same size.

The snout of the 8¼ is 1.6" longer than the snout of the 7¼, so your drive shaft will need to be 1.6" s

there are brackets too, i thought the brackets are already on the axle and they just sit on those rubber pads on the springs?

The axle has perches welded on to it. The perches sit on the springs. The U-bolts go on top of the axle and the shock mounts are on the bottom of the springs. The U-bolts go through the shock mounts and are bolted on the bottom side of the shock mounts. If you don't get the correct shock mounts, the correct U-bolts won't line up with the holes (they are further apart).

What years of 7 1/4s are you guys thinking about? M body 7 1/4s have the same diameter axle shafts as 8 1/4s.

Unless some other body styles had completely different 8 1/4s then M bodies, and this rear came out of one you'll just have to deal with the rear and the driveshaft. NOHTING ELSE!!! The U-bolts are identical, same with the shock brackets. I've never had to change any hardware when doing this swap on an M body before. Axle sat on the brackets fine, U bolt holes on the perches and the brackets lined up, U bolts dropped right over everything and bolted down fine. The shock brackets are ontop of the springs.

If 88dippy is dealing with a car other then his Dippy forget everything I said because I've only dealt with axle swaps on M bodies.

On my 73 A-body with a 7 1/4" the U bolts, seats and perches are the small sized ones.

Maybe they changed the 7¼ rears, in the later years. I have just never seen one with the larger axle tubes

As far as the speedo gear it also matters on what you wheel and tire diameter are along with you rear end ratio. Year One and other catalogs have a nice chart you can use to refference how many teeth you need.
