Question 383 7 1/4 combo???

Hey Fellas, How long can I expect a 7 1/4" axle to last behind a mild 383 and stock 727 for regular street use?

I plan to replace it with an 8 1/4 or 8 3/4 sooner or later, but I don't have one yet.

Hunt down an 8 3/4 rear now. The 7 1/4 will not last long at all. They fail behind /6's.

If you are gentle on the combo, the 7¼ will last you until you find an 8¾ or Dana 60.

I had a 7¼ behind a 383 4-speed that lasted until I started to hammer the gears, during a test & tune session. A couple of the spider gears stripped and the others shatter

Default hmmm...

3 burnouts and 1 good launch!
they are the weakest rear axle i have ever seen. I ditched mine for an 8.25. it holds up fine behind my 435hp360/727 combo in my 5th ave

I've blown 6 (SIX) with a Slant 6! They suck big time! If you pull 3 plug wires off your 383, and only drive on the primaries, you'll get a few hundred miles before the big block torque strips the spiders out of it.

Gripe

Yeah, I knew it was not a good idea. I only needed to get about 2 or 3 months out of it. I've got a line on an 8 1/4, and (for twice the price) an 8 3/4, both of which need to be rebuilt, but the 8 3/4 is a Suregrip with large bolt pattern axles, so I going with that. I'll just have to do the rebuild a little sooner than planned.

Thanks, everyone.
