Question A-body disks wo/spindle change?

I have heard you can change from drum brakes to disk brakes on an A-body using Mopar parts with out changing the spindles? Can this be? Anybody got a parts list? Thanks, JWH

You heard wrong. The only way to use discs on a drum rotor is to get the SSBC conversion kit.

Several kits use the drum brake knuckles but you can't do it with Mopar parts only. We sell a kit that is mostly Mopar. It uses drum brake knuckles from a '73 to '76 A body and then the B body 11.75 rotors and calipers from a Viper. That is as Mopar as you can get! The only non-Mopar part is the steel bracket that holds the Viper caliper onto the knuckle.

Andy,

All your web site says about the Viper kits is "coming soon".
Just want you to know there is interest out here!

Any estimate when they'll be ready?

The Viper on 11.75 kit has been available now for several weeks. I just haven't updated the website since I've been too busy working on the new shop. The mounting brackets are the only part that I'm going to sell. You'll have to come up with your own knuckles, rotors and calipers. The calipers of course are the expensive part, $500 each brand new from Mopar.

If you really want to pick up a set of the brackets you can call Ken or Chris at Hershberger Motors. 1-800-311-3945. They'll sell you a kit. They'll also sell you new Viper calipers if you want.

How do the Viper calipers compare to the Wilwoods? Stopping power, weight, pad life, ease of pad replacement, anything else that may be significant?

The Viper calipers are far superior to the Wilwood stuff. That is why they cost $500 each rather than $100! The Wilwood setup is for drag racing, the Viper stuff can handle severe road racing useage.
