Question aluminun main caps

What is the advantage to running aluminum caps rather then stock?
Also what are the draw backs?

supposed to give a little, like take a little shock out of an application. For what reason you would want this is up to you.

When you get the bb up in the 600hp the caps tend to walk. The cast caps are at there limit also. Opinion ,steel rods /alum caps
Alum rods/ Billet caps and studs on both.

Default a tad late

Dan. Just about all the pro's (McCandless, MP etc.) shy away from the use of alluminum caps. If the caps are walking, even with the use of studs, time to upgrade to a beefier block.

Thanks lenweiler
I have been trying to figure out how a metal as briddle as aluminum would be better then the factory caps.

The aluminum main caps work great. All the engine builders I know, including McCandless, recommend them in applications where you have enough power and not a better block available. In our big blocks I have seen the caps starting to walk with studs at 600+ hp. It can withstand a long time without doing any harm, but eventually it will crack the block. The caps themselves are not the problem, the block is. Monte Smith has used two bolt blocks in his GTX at over 1000 hp with aluminum main caps with no sign of cap walk. With a MP cross bolted block he saw some cap walk, so I guess the aluminum main caps kind of work? I run the stockers for five years in street & strip use at about 700 hp, they walked from the day one but it never broke. Currently i'm using an indy aluminum block, but has yet to tear it down. In our other engine we don't have much choices, since there aren't aftermarket 400 blocks. We are switching over to B1's and will install aluminum main caps too.
