Default Strength of.....

The rear end. Looking at an 8 1/4's limits. How much HP/Torque have you put to one. IF you don't know how much HP/Torque your engine makes for sure, time slips will due well.
Engine build ups last.

Just the facts please. Been there done thats welcome.

Cool Wellllllllllllll.....

Lemme see, Cuda66273 told me the other morning I was probably putting 345 hp at the crank (288 rear wheel) by doing 79.45 mph in the 1/8th @ 8.82 secs. So far, after replacing both u-joints, changing rear gear from 2.94 to 3.90 (sure-grip 8 1/4) with new bearings in back, re-arching H.D. rear springs (6 each side) with new bushings and shackle kit I have managed to twist the driveshaft...per my engine man (3 of 'em) as well as some fellow Ford racers. After reading an excellent article on 8 3/4's I find 8 1/4's to be a LOT better than 7 1/4 sets and reasonably close to enough for street use (no nitrous). My Dart weighs 3600# without me in it so not too bad for a moderately HEAVY A body. Sure wish I knew how much torque that adds up to though (hint hint wink ). 440cj

As far as I can tell from my G-tech, my 400 makes about 335 horse power(crank).

That, trying to move a 5000 lb van with an 8 1/4.

So far the 8 1/4 is stronger than the 727 I broke, on 1-2 shift, last month.

Default Just what I'm lookin for.

dave571; LOL. Good gravy, I'm cryin! lol I hope it wasn't toooo much to fix. Good luck.
440cj; Thanks. Sorry, my computer was giving me fits so the wife got into it and everything of no use was takin out. Sooooo, were the car programs and such. I can't tell you how much torque you have unless I break out the pencil and paper. But I would say plenty.
Have you run the full 1/4?

I'm just looking at what these have to offer. An 8 3/4 is well known for being strong. But I was also thinking of the price difference between them. You'll NOT find a 8 3/4 here in a junk yard or cheap. Just won't happen. Unless you get it in a car from an old lady selling her late husbands car.
The car currently has 4 whell drum. (UGH!) w/manual brakes.
A conversion is on the horizin. (sp)

Just the facts...

We ran a 8.25 last year, made basically the same HP...around 400+ at the crank

3.91 sure grip on 8.5 inch tires, best time was around a 12.80 I think at 3460#'s.

Never broke anything but we did have some sure grip problems towards the end of the year so we bolted in a Dana 60 with a Titanium spool and 4:56 gears on 10" hides.

12.126 at 109.99....3220#s

Quick question cuda66273

How long was the rear in service untill problems arose.
See that the car is strip duty only, it see's an abusive life compared to a regular street car.

Just the facts? Thanks Friday.

One season, however it would spin one tire only on occasion ans other than that it seemed to handle the task fairly well.

I sold it to a Guy here in town with a 67 Cuda 318 4BBl.....about 300 HP and he still has it and has had no problems and loves it.

The 4000 stall Dynamic Race convertor probably caused the problems...too much shock for the cone to handle.

My humble opinion anyhow....

Watch ebay. I recently picked up a complete (minus 3rd member) E-body 8¾ for $50. I had wanted a B-body 8¾ but this was the closest that I could fin

He was from N.Y. !

Best freind lives in Richmond. Going down for a little time off from the job. He runs his own biz and I'll go to work for him just for laffs. Anytime away from the job is a good time. Working for my freind is like play time. Although I'm sure he'll have me swinging a hammer like we used to.
I'll also meet Meepmeep426 to deliver him some parts.

Hey RB hows it going? same prob here in Colorado,no a body 8.75s left,so why not just shorten an 875 housing and buy aftermarket axles? thats what Id do,because youll have to do the same to make an 8.25 live and youll need c clip eliminators($180pr)to run at any track if your faster than 13.99.Personally I brake a 8.25 with a hopped 318!! split the yoke in 2 pieces and with 2,76 gears with street tires no fun plus I couldnt find the driveshaft as it was at night and it took off,I found it the next day it had gone into some ivy and rolled itself up ,I had to cut it out.............PRO.....

Greetings PRO. Hows biz? Things are well. Busy in the new home. Fix this, replace that, etc...
Well, I am looking for ease and cheaply getting things done. I would go your route if I was to race it at all. The car will see strip time just to help dail it in. The main idea is just a cruiser.
In the spirt of yesteyears equipment, it's tech edge will be low. Nothin fancy. Just old fasion tricks.
M-1 dual plane/small AVS/'73 "Trap door" air cleaner. Stock 340 cam inside a 360 w/headers. Heads will be 2.02 "J". Porting may not happen for a while.
I'm doing a little looking at the OD tranny MoPar has. It seems to be wide in the rear section. I'm not to thrilled with the "Major modifications" the body may need to fit it. Or running the extra wires for the operation of the OD gear. I know it's not a big thing.
A 700R4 was suggested to me since it's smaller and easier to fit. Not to thrilled with brand "C" in the car ethier. But it is an option. Just like brand "F's" tranny could be. Would like pentastar through & through if I can.
If the car runs 14 flat, that would be fine.
