I have a 1997 Intrepid with the 3.5L engine and would like to give it more pep. The engine seems good now, but I would like to see some pulleys, chips, exhaust, air filter, etc. If anyone has any ideas (would like to get into the 300M power range or higher) then please let me know.

Try K&N for your filter. I found one for my 91 Dynasty. I'm sure they've got one for yours.

Hector, I too have an Intrepid. 2nd one I've owned. I had a '95 w/ the little 3.3 in it. I wanted a some what sporty performance car that I could fit my 6 foot 3 friends into w/ comfort. The '95 was a "bare bones" test to see if I liked the car and as it turned out a few years later I went looking for a '97. I found this almost mint '96 w/ a lot of the "goodies!" I too would like "just that tad" more power we all crave! The K&N air filter is a good start, but I've seen some of the prices they want for these things up around $35. Ya, I know, they're reuseable, and @ say $5 apiece for regular filters you're talking about 5-7 years 'till pay back! Starting with the area the air comes into the filterbox, there is no "ram air effect." Some sort of intake "scoop" needs to be put directly into the air stream to get this. I think as it stands now the air is sucked in from inside the wheel housing somewhere. I think ram air would be more effective than the K&N, although both is the way to go only because the K&N is surpose to flo better. The 3.5 is no monster and the nice exhaust "header" manifolds Chrysler has already on there appear more than adaquate to exit the exhaust gasses wo/ any back preasure same as that large dia. single exhaust pipe. I plan some modifications starting @ the back of the "drive shaft" tunnel where the rather large stock single exhaust pipe ends, to use a "Y" splitter pipe, 2 inches dia. out, into dual smaller 2 inch in /out mufflers and some chrome tips for that dual exhaust look @ the rear. Course if you have the bucks you can run a custom real dual exhaust right from the headers. I'm not going to that expence the 1st time around partially because the stuff that's there has a lot of years left in it yet. With the real duals you want to put an "H" or "X" equalizer pipe on to and possibly ( clearance ? ) move the mufflers up under the mid-body of the car where dual mufflers typically reside. I've e-mailed Chrysler about any performance goodies for this car/engine, but so far I haven't gotten a reply to my immediate questions, only a reply telling me they're working on it. This is my main transportation vehicle so any mods that really get into the engine or trans will be very limited. I went that route many years ago as a hotrod teenager and had to many problems. I need reliability now. I save the hotrodding stuff for my '64 1/2 Mustang that I only use on occasion during the summer months. If you've got any ideas or get any from others, please post them, I'd like to hear what they have to say.

Hector, I received a responce from Chrysler entertaining my questions concerning the "factory" availability of performance "chips and "exhaust systems" for the 3.5 V6. Neither are available from Chrysler. Figures they'd drop the ball on an engine with such potential. No wonder "Chevy Shyt" is all around us and has got it all over Chrysler and Ford products. Back in the '60s and early '70s it was different though. They go the extra mile wo/ too much coaxing to give their performance fans what they require. Just for kicks, look @ the Ford Mustang. What the hell have they been waiting for since '82 to install a factory 351 V8 in the 'Stang? Why haven't they turbo'd the 302? What's Chrysler waiting for, all of us to join the Chevy fans? What a bunch of idiots! Some of us have got the cash, willing to spend it and these clowns refuse to acknowledge it!
I guess it's aftermarker time for what we want. Meineke, here I come for my "dual exhaust" system! HyperTech, maybe a source for a performance chip. Rich |
