Question 383 Engine Rebuild Cost

Hello,

I am looking into rebuilding the 383 in my RR and wanted to get some feedback on cost. I want to do a stock rebuild because I want dependability versus HP. I want the engine done from bottom to top with quality parts etc. I do not plan to reuse pistons, valves, lifters, cam, and like items. I do hope to reuse the crank.

Question, How much could I expect to pay for this job? I realize I am asking a very hard question due to so many variables but I need to ask.

Maybe folks can post what they paid?

Thanks for you time and comments,
Bob

Up here in the great white north, a rebuild from an economy shop, thrown together(parts only replaced as needed, but bored with new pistons) would run about 1800cdn(1200 usa $). Long block only. no balancing ect.

Done by a reputable shop, replacing all valves, springs ect, more like 2800(2000 usa$)

It's hard to be specific, because there remains the question of what accesorys your willing to reuse(ie a carb is $300)

The 400 wasn't bored, just reringed, new valves, the deck work, machining the intake to fit, Hv oil pump, a rebuilt distributor, a new edlebrok carb, and it cost me 2500 cdn. That's labour free!

This can be an expensive hobby!

I know how I'll pay for the headers! I'll just skip the morgage this month!

cry2 Sure do miss that B block...

Mine cost $2,900.00 at the machine shop to rebuild with new items you mentioned save the crank...added 170 horsepower for the same price as a stock rebuild would have been and probably tripled the reliability! 440cj

Wasn't there a "rule of thumb" something like 4 bucks a cubic inch? Seems the small block guys got it made by all the rebuilt long blocks available from every corner parts store. Of course a Hi-Po, Hi-Quality job is twice the price.

440cj,

I see you are from Fort Worth, did you get your work done locally? If so who did it and would you recommend them?

Thanks,
Bob
