every fri. and sat. nites,i have a dusty ol' work trk.,a daily driver, that i go out in after midnight. it is a 4500 lb. trk. at 1200 alt. that right now runs in the 12's. the kids just love it! last (4) yrs., it has gone about a sec. faster each yr. it's all motor, 440, the short block is stock. a 5000 rpm, torque motor. i ask em, how do you like having that $35,000 car, just dusted off by a $3500 work trk.? ah, the kids just love it! the LS1's, even the roach MASTAKES (roush mustangs), don't stand a chance. to make matters worst, this winter, i'm putting a new motor toghter,it will be a daily driver, and run 11.20's on the street, the kids are gonna love it! there's only one thing they hate worse than getting beat, and that's getting beat by a one armed, crippled fat man! ah, the kids love it!!!

old man art, thank you.

Default How many horses?

To get your 4500 lb truck to go 12 sec on a 1/4 mile, you'd probably need 650 - 700 HP's out of your 440. Is that a close guess?

to who it may concern, the trk is actually, 4200 lbs. it is 460 hp, 510 lbs of torque. i've got a auto with a 4-11 gear and run 12.80's to be exact. i see we have sticklers. at kcir, in kan. city, mo., it ran 12.80's. i have a 4-link, it doesn't spin a wheel, on the concret road we play on. the trans. shifts at 5,000 rpm, i cross the line at 5,00 rpm, all i do is lock the line lok up at the line, leave her in dr, and punch it. it is a very consistant very durable, at 5,000 rpm the motor will live for ever..if you would like more details on the motor or trk. please feel free to call, as i would be more than happy to talk to you about it. i am in the process of another motor to go in by the spring, it is a 450, 570 hp, and 530 or so lbs, that i'm looking at 11.20's, street daily driver, would be glad to talk about that one too.

sincerly, old man art.

Biggrin

Yeah, HPAC is familiar, have had a member application on top of the refrigerator for 6 months, but still have almost identical feelings with the last two clubs I've been involved with (age bias always kills me). Maybe after this winters work Ill check this club out a little closer.
Anyway, I feel my 440 is on its last leg (errr...would that be last cylinder?)
Been on the lookout for a decent/cheap running bigblock to swap out, and last until I can afford all the parts to build a stroker with the 440 I've got, but not alot of luck in this area (new here). Maybe we can get together one of these days and I can find out whats around here. (lol~edwardsville no less)

oh its ok Dan, going across the country for a salvagable block isnt high on my list of favorite things, if it came to that, I could just use one of my extras .
Art, on the other hand is, local though, so falls into another class altogether. Will be giving him a call sooner or later though.~
Oh and Art next time you are over by the Peterbuily place make lots of noise, since its just around the corner.

I have been to some HPAC events, it was back in the '89-'90 era. Does Dick (I think that was his name -- he always was a gracious host to us WichitaAreaMopar people) still have all those Superbirds and did he get the Hemi one done yet?

ANYWAY: I figured about 105mph for that 12.80 ET? Moving 4200 pounds from 0 to 105 in a 1/4 mile distance takes 375hp at the wheels, to get to 106 mph takes 386hp at the wheels.

beepbeeps rule;

Thank you for a knowledgeable note, it's nice to hear some intelligent comments. you are quite right, dick drake is still pres., and they still have the super birds. also, you are quite right, figuring 380 hp or so, to run 12's. an intelligent senior V. P, in your club, thought it might take, 650 or 700 hp, to run 12's. I guess his 450 hp challenger can't do it?Is that about right? You are also correct on mph, i run 104, mph in the 1/4.I will tell dick, you asked of him. Thank you, old man art.

Default Thou art funny,....

....no "pun" intended.

Seriously Art, I don't know why you are so bitter about my first posting. At the time, I didn't know about your rear-end (now I do). But, I still don't know what kind of tires you're driving on. You must be getting some serious traction to be getting these times on the quarter mile. I can't imagine that you're using stock tires, are you? Did you modify your rear suspension in anyway? After all, this is a truck we're talking about.

Maybe your grand-kids will believe all the stories you tell them when sitting around the fireplace in your rocking chair, but still, something doesn't seem quite right to me.

Sorry for being sceptical.

Art said he has a four-link under the bed. That would plant the tires pretty good. And in a street race all competitors will have pretty much the same traction disadvantages.

My brother runs a B-body wagon that weighs almost 4200 lbs and it cranks out 12.6-12.8's at 104-105+mph. It is a 440 powered vehicle also. The engine was built in 1988 and it just throws that car down the track. B-body's have pretty good suspensions and he can get 1.6-1.7 60 foot times without slicks, just wide 15 inch DOT tires.

If Art is spinning some off the line then his 60 foot times might only be 1.9-2.0's but you can still pull out a 12.80 from half track on, it just takes more HP.

The HP numbers I gave are absolute net at the wheels and assume no spinning and perfect runs (no misfires, bogging, fuel starvation, etc...). To hit 105mph in a 1/4 mile distance carrying 4200 lbs takes AT THE VERY LEAST 375 hp applied to the pavement.

Only Art knows what is in his heart, but so far I'm thinking he isn't embellishing much, if any. In fact, with a 440 like that you don't have to talk much at all, just ler 'er rip.......

Apologies gratefully accepted, I'm not gonna preach, but when I started this was supposed to be a fun thing. Racing "stories" something for the grandchildren. It was true but how can you expect the children to believe it when you don't? You'd expect a senior vp to ask questions first, ahead of disrespectful comments. The first two comments I got was from a senior member and senior vp at the club, and both I thought were unnecessary, disrespectfull comments. I was rather displeased about it. I asked if you have any questions, to please call or email me. Neither one did. Then, what I thought was an irrelevent, unecessary comment again and still no one contacted me. I do not feel this is the place for this kind of discussion, and it is not my choice. The truck has a four-link suspension with hoosier 29x11 in ET street type tires on the back. The suspension is set up for the street. At the track with 1.9-2.1 sixty ft, wheel spins pretty good. On the street, it doesn't spin a wheel, hooks up hard. I have it set up for the street. I'm no expert, but I've been doing this since the mid sixties. In the future, PLEASE ask questions, not make comments. It's easier for everybody. In the future, feel free to call or email if you have questions. I would be glad to talk or help anyone. This is what this is all about, when people are encouraged, not discouraged. If not from the older generation, then who passes it down? Where do you learn?
Sincerley old man art.
