rpm problem
My name is George, I have a 68 dodge dart, 170ci., milled head, 9.8 to 1 mechanical compression, stock valves and ports, mopar 2bbl intake, 318 carter carb (have tried 350 and 500cfm holley 2bbl), new airtex fuel pump, mopar electronic ignition with orange box, the cam is around .450 lift and 220 @.050 duration, new 340 valve springs, 30 degrees total timing, and a header. The problem is that it will not RPM past 4000 no matter how much I try, short of free revving. It does not surge like its running out of fuel, so I am a little lost. Its always been like this and I expected more when I recently installed the camshaft.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated Thanks, George |

What exhaust do you have behind the header?

George,
Is this an auto or a stick? If it is auto and you cant get it to rev past four grand try adjusting the kickdown linkage on your tranny. Make it tighter so it will hold the gear to higher rpm. There are limits to how much you can adjust. Are you talking about top gear only or through out all of the gears? A little more info would help. |

I have dual 2 1/4" pipes into a y pipe and a single 2 1/2" pipe to the muffler with no tail pipe. The trans is a 833 standard 4-speed with a 3.91 gear.

George,
It sound to me like you have a flow problem. Just changing the cam doen't always give you better flow. I would do a port job on the head and a gasket match. Also increase your total timing to 36, install a quick advance kit and if you have vacuum advance lose it. I assume this is a mechanical cam so double check valve lash. I am suprised, it wont go past four grand with 3.91 gears in any gear?? Your valves could be floating is that the recomended spring for that cam? Did you centerline the cam? Just trying to give you ideas. |

Check your fuel flow. Remove the fuel line from the carb, and put it into a can, Ground the coil wire, and crank the engine for 30 seconds. It should pump at least one pint in 30 secs. If not Check the fuel line from the tank for restictions or pin hole, that would suck air. Also the sock in the tank might be clogged.

Uncork the headers and give it a drive. You did not mention what kind of mufler you run. I've seen some small blocks that won't turn up. I have one now. About 4000 was all I could get too. Went dual 2 1/4 to dynomax turbo type with tails and gain about 4800. Engine is mainly stock. Pulled the dynomax and put on glass packs and now it will turn 6000. It will turn till it floats the valves if you stay in 2nd too long.
