ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE AS MUCH POWER AS POSIBLE I PLAN TO RACE THE TRUCK AT THE LOCAL TRACK. SHOULD I KEEP THE STOCK HEADS WITH FUUL COMP. PORTING AND 1.88 INTAKE/1.60 EXHAUST OR GO FOR BRODIX HEADS? I PLAN TO KEEP IT FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS THEN INSTALL A BB. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

A 6pak on a 318 is just OK fine. The 1.88-1.60 valves will help alot. Pocket porting the heads for good measure is good.
I have seen this once before. The lil'engine that could DID indeed.
A slight mill of the heads would be good. Comp wasn't all that on the 318's. It could use a slight bump up.
The "BRODIX HEADS" cost a good deal. I did a little reasearch on them. They'll rock, but there better for larger displacement engines. Keep it cheap and spend on the Big block.
Stay with the stock heads.
Cam works with gear and weight. (Stall if its an auto) And the times your searching for. As fast as you can on the cheap? Theres a challange.
No recomndations yet.

Default Thanks Doug!

Your welcome 2FAST4U. By the way, writing a reply or whatever, in caps is considered yelling.
I might have told you a larger cam, but it's been a while since I have had a 318 in a heavy ride. So I errored on the side of caution and gave you a cam with torque since thats what gets you moving.
Cams are cheap anyways and fun to change out.
cuda66273 races a 318 and could have a nice little edge on a cam recomendation.
He'll probably send you to Racer Brown for a custom cam. There not expensive as you might think.
Part of the eqaution missing is weight of truck, tire size being used and will you keep the stock converter?
These things will effect the cam suggestion as well as the speed of the truck.

My opinion... oops... I don't have opinions, I just state facts:

Skip spending money on the small block and go for a big block right away. You can put a stock 440 in for under $2000, and it will be as quick NOW as a pretty stout small block. Any bucks you spend on the 318 now, will be money gone when you're ready for the BBC (Big Block Chrysler - thought I meant some OTHER BBC, didn't you? Ours was first!) You will never recover those $ spent on the SBC (you know what that means).

You could also buy a running 440 for $500 or $600 and spend another $500 on the swap, and there you are. Also... it's winter - the perfect time to do it!

There have been people on this forum who disagreed with me, until they found out the real facts.

thanks for the help. i found a cam i think will work nicely (.450/.455) lift and a 268/272 duration for mp. and use the 1.88/1.60 valves with the stock heads. by the way the trans is a 727 and the truck weight is about 3000lbs with driver. close to that anyways

sorry for the yelling i alwas type in caps cause i'm blind as a bat with this little font

Default Swirl port heads

Find a set of 302 casting heads off a mid to late 80's 318. It will flow as well as a set of 360 heads without sacrificing the CR with the larger 360 combustion chambers. I ran a 318 in a 1979 Chrysler LeBaron with those heads, a Sig Erson Torquer cam, and otherwise stock, except for a 4 barrel carb and intake. Unfortunately with the stock 2.71 gears, it was pretty slow off the line but it would swoop over 100 mph with ease. Pretty nice for a cruising rig. Best thing is that the 318 will get mucho better mpg over a big block, but If you want more power off the bat, the big block is the way to go. Heck, you could pick up a smogger 400 and build up a pretty decent performer engine for not a lot o' cash. One of the Mopar mags built up a 410 hp version that worked really well. cruzerjd

Default Casting #'s

If i remember correctly. mine were cast on top of the #1 or #8 intake runners, underneath the valvecovers. They also had castings underneath the pushrod galleus on the heads. It should have 302 as either the starting or ending #, I don't recall which. Those heads gave me an honest 15 to 20 Hp difference over the older heads. If the Dippy is post 85, it should have the 302 casting heads. Hope this helps, cruzerjd82
