Gripe Tired tranny and where to go...

Still have a driveline "thrumming" (pinion angle?) and now the trans. "shudders" and slips in reverse SO...would you just get a new trans. aftermarket OR take a chance and try to find a reputable rebuilder locally and toss him $600.00 to redo it? Which aftermarket companies have you guys used sucessfully? B&M? Hughes? Can't afford more than $1,000.00 total plus shipping but aren't sure which way to go... '74 Dart sport with a mild 360 (345 hp at the crank) and 727 floor shift...3.90 sure grip. 440cj

Some guys do their own, and say that they aren't very hard. Cost of parts is under $150. I would not try it. I bought a Tci Street Fighter, with one of their 2400 RPM stall converters for about $1000 from P.A.W. It was a 904, and I guess you'd want a 727, which is about $100 more. When you do it, be SURE to get a new (rebuilt) converter. I'm happy with mine.

Good luck.

TCI makes a great street strip between 700 and 800 with no exchange. Can't beat that. It's all I've ever used and never broke one.

I had my 727 rebuilt locally for $450.00. that was him pulling it, and putting it in a a new case(broken from putting a new starter in) He took a month to do it, but I'm very happy with the results. Oh by the way, check around, I was told not everybody can rebuild a transmission. It pays to find the best.

A trans that slips and shudders in reverse might only need a simple band adjustment.
Pull the pan and adjust the rear band before writing the trans off.

 Hmmmmmmmmmm

I also notice that every time I start the car it nudges forward about 1" at first, then settles back due to being in park. Would the adjustment that fixes the reverse shudder also fix that? Also, isn't it TCI that has the bad rep for crap torque convertors or am I wrong? Bad convertor, good tranny...hmmmm 440cj

Yeh. I'll second that. I had one of those piece of junk ger converters too. I wouldn't even use it for a boat anchor. TCI's are great trans and I've got one with a TCI converter in it now behind a mild 360. Like I said before I've raced em and used em on the street and never broke one. There worth the money. Just check jegs,Summit and other's to get you a good price.

I don't believe you mentioned the mileage/age or wear of the tranny, but, were it mine I'd give it a real good tune-up first, like John suggested. Adjust the bands front and rear, give the internals a good inspection, and consult a shop manual - they've got quite a good troubleshooting section for the Torqueflites. If it has a shift kit, you're going to want to take that into consideration when adjusting bands and setting line pressure.

Mopar Performance may still offer all-new 727s. I know they used to, and the price was in line with a good rebuild.

Best of luck

Before you take anything apart and spend all that money try some

Justice Brothers tanny additive.

Ya ya I know....hocus pocus mystery juice...but trust me here and invest $12.00 before you invest $1200.......I've seen it work ...my motorhome tranny was in serious trouble....1 pint of JB and it's been pulling the 17,000 pound load for almost a year now no problems at all.
