8.25" rear end help
Please help......Any one know if the gears from a late model 8.25 98ish dakota fit an earlier model 8.25" (74 duster) rear end?
I want to install the 3:92's into the duster. The dakota gears are 3.92's, and the duster has a 3.21 suregrip. Are these interchangeable? Thanks in advance |

8.25
i don't think you can swap suregrips because in 96? the changed the axle spline count from 27 to 29.

just to clarify, the ring and pinion is from the dakota, the sure grip and the housing is from the duster. I need to know if the gearset (ring and pinion only) will swap.

I used a set of 3.55:1 gears out of a Dakota in my 72 Dart. The Dakota gears are really 8 3/8" but they work just fine. My 8 1/4" rear never had a minutes trouble with the gears. Installation was the same, just heat up the ring gear in the oven, then slip it into place.

Thanks Mr.mopar, thats what I needed to know. I can get the gears for $100 (canadian pesos) so it's a good deal. I also have a brand new 8.25 sure grip so I should be set. I am going to run the 3:91's with an OD 4spd, so I should get good acceleration plus reasonable highways rpms. The only thing that worries me is the large gear ratio jumps in the OD 4 spd. might be like drivin' a 3sp.

As a matter of fact I just sold my 3:55's to my buddy for $150.00 and he is putting them in his 74 Dart Sport. I now run 3.91's and I like them. Wish I had the overdrive. She spins about 3500 rpm at 60 mph. Too bad winter is here, would like to keep going on this project. Damn Canadian weather!

Yeah the weather is bad, I stored my driver 74 duster for the winter so no more driving it. I have a spare 8.25 diff so I will install the gears, suregrip and go through the brakes and bearings, sandblast and paint etc. so it should be ready for the spring to install.
With the od and the 3:91's the final ratio will be 2.81, which should be perfect for the highway. plus I will still be able to melt the tires. Now it is time to tear apart the circle track car and prep it for next season of racing. No rest for the wicked.......... |

MrMopar is right, the 8 3/8" gears will swap into std "old time" 8 1/4" axle housings.

Keep in touch, 340duster, always nice to hear from another Canuck. Do you know where I could get a book on rebuilding the 727, I can't seem to find a good one.

Hey MRMOPAR!! What ratio originally was on the carrier you put the 3:55s on? I have a 75 Duster with 2:45s and have read there are different carriers for the higher ratios. Is this consistent with what you have encountered? Also there is a guy in Utah that is selling like new 3:55s from late model Dakotas for $49.00 on E-bay. I bought a set and they are mint!!

Mine was originally a 2.94 open rear and now I have 3.91's. As far as I know, there is now difference in the 8.25 carrier. You can put in 4:10 or 4:56 but you need the notched cross shaft to enable you to get the C-clips on and off. I can't remember seeing anything about a different carrier. Good deal on the E-Bay gears!

Thank you Mr Mopar!! Do any of you guys remember an article form Popular Hot Rodding called $1.98 posi?? I think it dates back to the late 70s and was talking about 9 inch ford rears but should apply to any spider setup. They were shimming up the spiders very tight and it made the carrier act like a posi without tire drag or squeal in turns. Heck even if it did make a pop who cares if it works!! I will let you know the results of my efforts in this area of experamentation.

A-body-TX - A friend of mine tried this on his ford nine inch many years ago after reading the article. It acted more like a spool and eventualy let go. It lasted a few days of street driving but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you only travel in a straight line.

TWO CARRIERS
Concerning the question about two carriers forthe 8.25; yes, there are two different carriers and ring gears will not interchange. If I recall correctly, ring gear interchangability is only a problem with the 2.45:1 rear.

Loadrunner is right there is a difference with the 2:45 carrier.

Loadrunner may be right, the 2:45 gears carrier could be different. Sorry, almost led you astray. Check into it a little further, I didn't catch the 2:45 thing right away. I know that mine had 2:94's and everything fit into it with no problems. You may have to get a sure grip from the local Chrysler dealer or if you want, I still have my open gear carrier that I could sell you for a very reasonable price. Let me know.

Thanks for the heads up on the 2:45 carrier thing. I thought I had read that somewhere but never had messed with the 8 1/4 housings. I am picking up another 75 Dart parts car that has an 8 1/4 axle.. I'll see what it has in it.
