Post ThermoQuad performance qain results.......

.......just in is some track results from two guys that are running ThermoQuads:

1)a race prepped 1,000 cfm carb that replaced a well tuned 1,000 cfm Competition Series. The car in question was running the C S 1,000 cfm carb and ran consistent 12.76's in the quarter mile and when he switched to my race 1,000 cfm, the car picked up over 1/2 second in et, it ran a 12.23 in the quarter;

2)a stock build from a late 1978-1984 style 800 cfm T.Q. that replaced a 600 cfm Holley on a mild 318 picked up 3/10's in et in the quarter mile.

I just replaced the calipers and pads on my 1964 440 B'cuda and test drove the car for the first time in quite a while with a race 1,000 cfm T.Q. MAN, jees!!!, this was the first time I had driven the car with a race prepped carb and the performance was pretty incredible!!!

It's just plain fun driving old MOPARS and flooring the gas pedal.

Plus it makes that unforgettable noise

I'm going to have an e-mail for you within the next week or so (putting the car away for the winter).

Thanks a lot for the info, Dave... I think a bunch of people have no clue as to what a great carb it is!

Im putting one (850) on my 451 in my '65 Cuda. I got a non published Crane Monster Motor cam (like .660 lift with a 280 duration) and Hogged out Magnum 2.625 inch manifolds running a 3 inch head pipe to 3 inch Terminators and 2.5 to the tail. I have no clue as to what the carbs jetting should be or is currently. Do you sell jets/rods and maybe a guestimate to get me in the ballpark? I can always fall back to my 650 Demon but I dont plan to rap this over 6100 and the Demon may run out of air before that.

By the way, your Web page is down...http://home.earthlink.net/~mrburke/demonsizzler/carbs

should be http://www.geocities.com/thermoquads/

How do you guys keep birds from getting sucked into the carb when the secondaries open? The beak and feathers are hard on the secondary air door. (LOL)

Thanks Doug! and as you and I know, the performance of the carb is indesputable. I do exactly what it takes to make max power from my engine and max power is the #1 reason why I am into MOPARS.

PISHTA, I do sell new primary and 2ndary jets; unfortunately there are no new metering rods at the present, but if you set-up the carb correctly, there is no need for changing the metering rods since you can adjust the metering rod tree.

I have plans to pit my ThermoQuads aginst other 4 bbl carbs at local(Georgia drag strips) next spring and will continue my R & D
with the carbs this winter. I am currently working on my new monster race T.Q. and hope for close to 1,100 cfm's, DAVID.

Dave - if you're looking for a pit grunt at the shootout, I'd like to come do that. I was born in Atlanta, so I could also do some visiting. If you are interested, I'd need about a one month notice, and I'd stay for two weekends of racing.

Default TQ tuning

Demon Sizzler - could you do a post like cuda66273 has done but for tuning and setting up/tweaking thermoquads? I think it would help me and many others who are afraid of them. I want to use one on my circle track car but am afraid to try it. I currently run a 500 holley 2bbl, but would like to try a 850TQ as our rules read "stock 4bbl or holley 4412 2bbl". I am sure I gcan gain in performance with a properly set-up TQ.

DEMON - I would like to know if there is a certain type of Thermoquad that this has to be done to. I have 6 six these things, and none really run how they should...all the 850 cfm 440 units w/ large secondary. But all are from emission 440's.

One actually worked pretty damn good for awhile, but started to fall down after use. If I can get one of these things rebuilt and super tuned instead of buying a 850 Holley DP like I had planned, I would really be interested.

Default Other end of the spectrum

I am hunting a Thermoquad for my 360 Ramcharger. I need the best mileage I can get out of this beast and currently I get 11-12 MPG. A Jacobs Mileage Master ignition system is on order and next I want to swap my Edelbrock #1406 to a Thermoquad with the 1 3/8s primaries. This is a heavy beast and low end grunt is all I am after along with mileage.

Good thinking you guys. The T/Q is without a doubt the best carb ever... and I mean EVER.. designed.

You and I was always the first two on here to come to the Thermoquad's defense when someone started slamming them on here.

Gosh I wish they would start producing them again.

ARE YOU LISTENING EDELBROCK?????

Huh? Federal Mongul?????

Am I alone here????

Thumbs up Yep, will dig it up...........

There was a blurb in a back issue of MoPar Muscle about the plastic center section.
It was several months ago. I will dig through my stack and find it.
As far as I know there are 2 types. One for 1 1/2" primaries and the one for 1 3/8" primaries.

Front to back angles are not to bad, and straight to the side is doable, but when one front wheel is down, that is where the trouble starts.

I have one on my 360 and one on my 440. They are a smog carb. They are well designed and will nearly duplicate the performance of a double pumper with their venturi effect secondaries.

I wouldn't worry about the plastic piece, the TQ's achilles heel is the throttle shafts. They are prone to leak there, and the cheesy bushing kit that is available is best used when the carb is brand new, line boring is needed when they are wore.

I dont read any Off road mags, but the ONE I thumbed through had an article on a TQ, it said it was the best on angles! AFB's leaked after a certain angle and Holleys did the same, but the TQ hung in there for a few more degrees. It was on a International Scout 2 (the Other OEM to use TQ's) they tested lateral and fore/aft.

Hey Sizzler how about a link to your website? Many of us older folks know the advantage of running a TQ. I am currently doing some horse trading trying to get one for my 318. I would realy like to send it your way once I get my grubby pawls on it for an overhaul. Anybody, what is a good intake manifold to run with a stock 340 cam and a TQ?

The stock 340 T/Q manifold is one of the all-time greats, and very hard to improve upon. The Weiand Stealth is good - as well as some others.

MOPAR engineers told me that the 71 - 340 intake was the best cast iron intake to run on the circle track. I am very pleased with the results that we have seen with it. That's my answer for what ever its worth. Good luck.

Thank you demonsizzler, I look forward to reading it and putting it to good use at the track. Please be sure to include info about making the TQ work with a lumpy cam. I have had good results with adding bleed holes in the primary throttle plates, but maybe there is more.

Doug Wilson - You know your stuff! First you not only like Thermoquads but recognize they are one of the best engineered carburetors ever AND you know that the stock 340 intake rocks!

So that's why my stock appearing A/C Duster runs 13.3's @ 103Mph!
