How much horsepower will a 904 stand up to. I am putting a 69 dart together and would like to know if a 904 will work for around 300 hp.
Thanks

The 904 should live. You should think about upgadiing the internals if you are going to build the motor up. If I remember correctly you can install the 518 internals (which are way stronger). I would suggest that if you plan on doing any serious motor mods in the future to upgrade to the 727 while you have it apart. There is much controversy on this issue and I have had personal experience with the 904 not lasting very long in a performance application. The 727 is bullet proof and will last forever on the street.

I'd go with a 727, or better yet upto a 518 if you don't mind doing a bit of work to get it in and have the budget to get one. I haven't had a 904 last behind a stockish 360.

I'm not sure if you can add the 727/518 internals to a 904, if you can that would defeat the purpose about using the smaller tranny.

Not exactly 4th. The 518 intenals should be stronger being based off a 727.

Dart,

What failed on your 904('s)? My biggest problem has been kickdown band failure, even using Kevlar bands. Just curious as I am building a 904 now and using the best internals I can, reasearching a lot too cuz I don't really wanna pull it out again for a while.

For those who care about numbers:

The friction surface area of one side of a 904 clutch disc is 6.97 square inches, a 727 is 14.02 sq. in. With an equal number of clutch discs the 727 has twice the clutch surface of the 904 and a larger piston to apply the clutches.

The kickdown band on a 904 has 23.79 sq. in. of surface area while the 727 has 44.80 sq. in (almost double) and has a larger servo piston to apply the band.

If you were running a 4-speed would you want an 8" clutch instead of a 10.5" or 11"?
