I recently took ownership of a '72 duster with a six cylinder auto and was wondering, how do I know which diff it has (8.25 or 8.75) and how do you tell at a glace?

like this

7 1/4 has a stop sign shaped cover, with ten bolt holes.

8 1/4 has a round cover with 10 bolt holes(I don't think these came on duster's till 73)

8 3/4 has no cover at all, as the carrier comes out the front. No tin pan cover, or diff pan/gasket.

a 7 1/4 actually has 9 bolts. the 8 1/4 does have 10 bolts, though.

if the car was a 6 cylinder from the factory, it should have a 7 1/4. they did stop using the 8 3/4 on a-bodies after 1972

9 bolts???

I thought they're both 10.

That seemed to be the concensus on a previous thread, that's why the shape of the cover is necessary to determine which diff is which.

im pretty sure its 9 bolts on the 7.25 and 10 bolts on the 8.25. of course, in a situation i would go look at one of my cars or my shop manual. of course, all of that is at my shop.

but i do remember the 7.25 not being round, and the 8.25 definately being round.
