Head SWAP! Whats the difference in volumes??
Massaging my 360 powered Ramcharger is still in progress.
The Jacobs ignition system so far has not seemed to increased my around town mileage any but it has add about 1 MPG on the highway mileage. Most of my driving is around town But the difference it has made in cold/hot starting and throttle response is great. I am still pleased with the Jacobs system. Something that has always been a problem is that my static compression hit around 8:1 because of the huge valve relief in the FM hypereutectic pistions I put in the 360. The engine is weak until I run about 18* of inital advance, then it really comes to life. BUT, the down side is getting my vacuum advance to work without pinging (so far, no go) and getting it not to ping under heavy load on 87 octane gas. I can back off on my timing some then no pinging, but the power is way down. Next is a head swap to swirl port heads. Those heads have smaller combustion chambers that will increase my static compression, and also the head design is more efficent that would also increase my gas mleage. The question is what is the difference in chamber volume between a set of 915 360 heads and a pair of 302 318 heads? I still have the original tired 318 that came out of my '85 Ramcharger. That should have swirl port heads correct?? |

Totally Lame
I dug the 318 out of the corner of my garage and check the block and head casting numbers.
The block has a casting date of 9/7/78 and casting number of 400-6730-318-3 The heads have a casting number of 4027593. So this is no way the orginal engine for my Ramcharger anyway! Anyone have a decoder book that can give me an idea what this engine came out of ??? Oh well. Actually this old 318 runs ok and doesn't smoke. I guess I will put it in the paper and sell it for $100. |

chamber sizes
915 heads have a chamber size of 65 cc
593's have a 63cc chamber. not much help. If you are gonna go with those small valves, get some 273 heads, they all have 57cc chambers. In fact I know where there is a 65 Dart GT with one in it for $300 and its in Morristown! 5th |

Na, 302s would suit better
Yeah, the 318 stuff I have isn't going to do me a bit of good.
I can kick myself because I had a pair of 302 heads someone gave me. I threw them out when I was cleaning out the garage a couple years ago. I have a buddy I believe I can score a set of heads from. CHEAP TOO. Hey, he isn't that far from you 5th. He lives down HWY 92 past Cherokee Dam. |

Yeah 5th.....
I wouldn't mind checking out your MoPar. Hey the guy that bought my '69 Coronet lives in Jefferson City I think. Maybe it was Morristown.
If you ever see a bronze colored '69 Coronet 440 running around with a black 6pac hood, that is probably the one I built. My email is tnunley@comcast.net Drop me a line some time. |

The 65 and 63 cc's are blueprint values, in reality they may be way different. The open chamber 318 heads I have measures(including 593's) have been in the 68-70cc range. The 915 heads should be a few cc's bigger if they are unmilled. I would mill the '915 heads .060" to reduce the chamber about 12 cc which would help your CR a little. Remeber to mill the intake face of the heads too accordingly and use RTV in the end rails of the block for sealing. Also check your lifter preload and correct if needed. And use the thinnest head gasket you can find.
