Hi,
If anyone knows how I'd go about getting these I'd really appreciate the help. My 95 Intrepid 3.3 steering system is currently in a million pieces. I'm trying to change the Rack & Pinion steering gear because the intake housing is cracked and it is leaking. I have the whole thing apart and a re-man unit on order, but I am unable to complete the job because I can't get out the press fit roll pin that holds the gear to the linkage. The shop manual calls for special tool 6831a, however I was told by the Dodge parts store that they couldn't (or possibly wouldn't) get it for me. I've called several auto parts stores and they said they have no source for such a thing. Someone suggested trying a Snap On truck. I have no idea whether they would have it or not, but it's something of a moot point because they won't sell to individuals, only to shops. If there is anyone out there who knows how I could get this tool from Chrysler, I'd really appreciate it. I'm a bit perplexed how they could require a special tool to do a job, but then not supply it. Thanks In Advance em |

I really can't stand the ignorance of some of our dealers. They are required to sell these tools and are an authorized dealer to sell Mopar/Miller Special Tools. If you dealer wants to act stupid about it, thumb your nose at them and call Miller Special Tools at 1-800-801-5420. The tool number is their part number. I assume you have the Factory Service Manual for you Intrepid. The ordering info for the tools should be inside the back cover. The tools aren't cheap, but they are the real deal and are worth it if you do this work often.

Your local Snap On guy will sell to you. I called Snap On, got the name and number of the guy in my area and he came to my house.

I just use a long punch to get that pin out. Also be sure that the steering wheel does NOT turn & that the new rack is in the same position as the one you took out or you will break the clock spring in the steering column. Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips. Since this is (I hope) a one time fix for my own car, I used the hammer and punch method. It worked just fine.
Thanks em |
