Default when to add a cam

I'm about to do a pretty signifigant rebuild of my 318; mill the heads 0.04" (should bring comp to about 9:1 correct?) performer intake, porting, k&n filter and 4 bbl carb, and was wondering if I'm going to choke my engine with the stock cam. Any opinions?

Yes

The cam is the life force of the engine. If your going to the trouble to do head work, a cam upgrade is a very good idea.

Equally, don't go crazy. You want a cam to match the work your doing. Don't take the advice of a pep boys counter man, call a cam manufacturer, give them your info and go from there.

From the sounds of your combo you will want something similiar to a stock 340 camshaft. Do your reserch, don't take my work for it.

If you install a used cam from some wreck in your new engine, I'm going to make sure the insane assyelm people beat you over the head with a cam surrplyed by me! What! To dang cheap to but a 150 dollor bump stick.
You'll get what you deserve out og that engine . Your nuts!

I ought to take your car and revcoke your MopPar license. Give that car to a nun!
Break off a pair of benji's and get a good stick for your ride!!!!!!!!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER CUT YOURSELF SHORT LIKE THAT !!!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, DO SUCH A DIS-SERVICE TO YOUR CAR LIKE THAT!!!!!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A ENGINE THAT YOU SUNK YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY INTO.

BUT, if you got money to burn like that, I could use about $200.

ummm, forgiveness? i had no idea a used cam is out of the question. well, so doing it right would be buying a nice shiny cam from mancini or something? you know, I'm a student, and I understand a lot of things i have to buy new. i wish someone did a project similar to mine who knows what i need for this to work. i dont want to work my butt off on this thing and find out i made a big mistake along the way. sorry rumblefish, i try to learn buddy, but beat me if you must

Your forgiven. Not a problem.

Advice, need to know, questions on what's what and how it should go?

Just ask, I have been there and done that on most occasions.
I'd be happy to help and so would everone else here.

Remember though, cutting corners here and there will cut you out of the picture.
It's never cheap to do it right, but in doing right, you do once. It's cheaper to do right than wrong once.
Wrong once is to much money since you'll do it all agian.
